Paipa is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Boyacá in Colombia .
geography
Paipa is located 2525 m above sea level on the Río Chicamocha , 15 km from Duitama . The municipality borders Gámbita in the Departamento de Santander to the north, Duitama and Tibasosa to the east, Firavitoba to the south and Tuta and Sotaquirá to the west .
population
The municipality of Paipa has 31,868 inhabitants, of which 20,202 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).
history
The area of today's Paipa was inhabited by the indigenous people of the Kaziken Tundama before the arrival of the Spaniards . Paipa was founded in 1602 by Luis Enríquez.
economy
The main industries in Paipa are agriculture , cattle and milk production, and mining (coal, sand and stones). In particular, oats , barley , corn , wheat , potatoes and pulses are grown . There is also a textile and chemical industry and products made from wood, food and building materials are made. Tourism also plays an important role . The Termopaipa power plant is located in Paipa .

Paipa is known as the Capital turística de Boyacá (Tourism Capital Boyacá ) and is particularly known for its spring and thermal baths. Important tourist destinations are the Sochagota Lake , the Hacienda Casona del Salitre , an old mansion, and the Monumento Pantano de Vargas , a monument to the independence hero Juan José Rondón and his troops.
