Moniquira is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Boyacá in Colombia .
etymology
Moniquirá means "city of baths" in the Chibcha language of the Muisca (Quira = city).
geography
Moniquirá is located in the north of Boyacá in the province of Ricaurte , 65 km from Tunja , and has an average temperature of 19 ° C. The community is located at about 1700 meters in the Boyacensian plateau of the Colombian Andes on the Río Moniquirá . The municipality is bordered by San José de Pare in the north, Togüí , Arcabuco and Gámbita in the Departamento de Santander in the east, Gachantivá and Santa Sofía in the south and Barbosa and Puente Nacional in Santander in the west .
Demographics
The municipality of Moniquirá has 21,182 inhabitants, of which 10,715 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).
history
Moniquirá goes back to settlements from pre-colonial times. The place has been at its current location since 1556. Moniquirá received the title of Villa Republicana (Republican City) in 1825 .
economy
The main industry in Moniquirá is agriculture . In particular, sugar cane , coffee and corn are grown. In addition to Panela and Bocadillo produced (a guava candy). Tourism also plays a certain role.
