Chiquinquirá is a municipality ( municipio ) in the Colombian department of Boyacá .

Chiquinquirá consists of two zones: the urban zone or city, which is formed by around 40 residential areas between layers 1 and 4, and the rural area, which is divided into 17 sub-areas that surround the city.

Chiquinquirá is located in the province of Occidente in the Departamento de Boyacá about 67 km west of Tunja and 132 km north of Bogotá at 2587 m above sea level and has an average annual temperature of 14 ° C. The municipality borders Saboyá in the north , San Miguel de Sema , Caldas and Simijaca in the Cundinamarca department in the south, Tinjacá in the east and Caldas and Briceño in the west .

history

Chiquinquirá existed before the arrival of the Spaniards and was inhabited by the Chiquinquirá indigenous people. That is why there is no official founding date for the city. The "miracle" of the independent restoration of a miraculous image of Our Lady is dated to the year 1586. Since then, Chiquinquirá has developed into the religious capital of Colombia and grew as a result. Construction of the Rosary Basilica began in 1801 but was not completed until 120 years later. Chiquinquirá declared its independence from Spain in 1810. The Virgin of Chiquinquirá has been the patron saint of Colombia since 1919 .
