Location of the Amazon in Colombia |
The Departamento del Amazonas is a large but very sparsely populated province in the extreme south of Colombia . Only on the border river to Peru are there a larger number of settlements.
geography
The department borders in the east on the Amazon basin of Brazil , in the south and west on Peru . To the north are the Colombian departments of Putumayo , Caquetá and Vaupés .
The border river between the department and Peru is the middle and lower reaches of the Río Putumayo , which flows into the Amazon not far from Leticia . Here the Departamento del Amazonas juts out 160 km to the south with a narrow spur to the Amazon river itself, which forms the triangle Tres Fronteras with Peru and Brazil .
Agriculture is the main line of business. There are corn , cassava , plantains and rice grown on poor quality soils. Fishing, tourism, the extraction of wood (mahogany, cedar) and trade play other economic roles.
The rich flora and fauna can be seen in the Amacayacu National Park .
Administrative division
The Departamento del Amazonas consists of two municipalities (CM) and nine offices (CD). The offices are characterized by the lack of urban structures. The population figures are based on the DANE 2005 census, extrapolated for 2018.
