Ovejas is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Sucre in Colombia .

Ovejas is located in the center of Sucre , in the sub-region of Montes de María at an altitude of 256 m above sea level. NN about 41 km from Sincelejo and has an average annual temperature of 28 ° C. The municipality borders in the north on El Carmen de Bolívar in the department of Bolívar , in the east on Córdoba in Bolívar, in the south on San Pedro and Los Palmitos and in the west on Colosó and Chalán .

history

The first settlers in the area of today's community were Indigenous of Zenú . The current place was founded in 1776 by Antonio de la Torre y Miranda as San Francisco de Asís . However, Ovejas prevailed as the name , as a hacienda nearby bore this name. However, the name San Francisco de Asís remained for the church.
