Galeras is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Sucre in Colombia .

geography

Galeras is located in the center of Sucre , in the Sabanas sub- region at an altitude of 80  m above sea level. NN about 80 km from Sincelejo and has an average annual temperature of 32 ° C. In addition to the urban part, galeras consists of five corregimientos and 17 veredas (rural administrative sub- units). The municipality borders in the north on Sincé , in the east on Magangué in the Departamento de Bolívar , in the south on San Benito Abad and in the west on Sincé and El Roble .

The municipality of Galeras has 21,548 inhabitants, of which 13,240 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Galeras received parish status in 1968. Galeras was particularly populated from San Cosme , a neighboring village. In the meantime, Galeras achieved administrative independence several times, but this was not permanent until 1968.

economy

The main industry of Galeras is agriculture . In particular, rice , cassava , corn and fruit are grown. There is also cattle and milk production .
