All about the championships

In the run-up to the championships, the German Nordic ski elite was trained for three months by Norwegian Gunder Gundersen . Gundersen ended his coaching for this season on January 30, 1955 and said goodbye, especially for the special jumpers, with words of praise. However, he saw a need for action, especially in cross-country skiing .

In addition, Neustadt had to struggle with snow concerns, which made all efforts of the population and the sports manager Hermann Faller in vain. As there was no snow, the cross-country skiing championships and the relay championships were held on the Feldberg . For the two Hochfirstschanzen 150 trucks, which together covered around 3500 kilometers, had to collect snow from the Feldberg. The charges were dropped on the jumping hill and distributed by means of a “sheet metal track”.

At the seventh post-war championship, 30 km cross-country skiing was added to the program as a new discipline, so that before the first competition was held, it was discussed whether the short distance runners or the endurance runners would dominate.

Else Amann from SC Unterjoch won the women's cross-country race over 10 kilometers with a powerful and balanced running style. The 31-year-old became German champion for the second time since 1952. Rita Blasl's performance was seen as a surprise, mastering the easy trail in second place and thus placing herself in front of the three-time title holder Hanni Gehring-Steinmüller .

Association relay

Date: Friday February 4, 1955

The women's relay over 3 × 5 kilometers caused a surprise in an icy snow storm on the Feldberg . The representatives of the Black Forest Ski Association (Stadel 34:08 min, Dubac 31:53 min, Blasl 32:33 min) won ahead of the favorite Bavarian relay (Puchler 35:28 min, Amann 29:48 min, Gehring-Steinmüller 34:11 min). The Swabian team came in third place (Röder 35:01 min, Fahrner 33:00 min, Köhrer 32:26 min). This was followed by West Germany (1:45:22 hours), a mixed season (1:47:06 hours) and the Harz (1:49:46 hours).

97 athletes started the 15 km cross-country skiing on the Feldberg and found a difficult route with 270 meters difference in altitude. Especially the first five kilometers with steep climbs to the Herzogenhorn selected the field, whereas the second third was typically Nordic and the final section in undulating terrain was easier to run. The tragic figure of the competition was Josef Schiffner , who ran out of competition and whose ski broke after four kilometers. Ultimately, the 29-year-old customs assistant Hermann Möchel was able to pull away on the last kilometers and won the race in 57:22 minutes.

The snow problem led to a relocation at the beginning of the championships. Although the 30 km cross-country skiing could take place as planned on Wednesday, the running route had to be relocated from the snow-free Neustadt to the highest peaks of the Feldberg . There, 21 athletes started the first competition of the championships, but twenty of them quickly realized that this year there was no way around the Sudeten German Hermann Möchel . Möchel mastered the Feldberg trail more than five minutes faster than the second-placed Rudi Kopp , who fought a close race with Oskar Burgbacher .

The now 30-year-old Hermann Möchel won his seventh championship title on the Brend mountain near Furtwangen in the Black Forest and was the first German to win all championship races. In front of around 2000 spectators, Möchel crossed the finish line arm in arm with Oskar Burgbacher , who started two minutes before him. The field of participants was only weakly occupied with 16 athletes and suffered from the absence of Bavarian runners.

Association relay

Date: Sunday February 6, 1955

In the 4 × 10 kilometer relay race - the distance being a little longer than ten kilometers - Helmut Böck ran the fastest individual time with 48:46 minutes. The Bavarian Ski Association became the German champion , although Möchel, as the final runner in the Black Forest, had already led by a minute. Möchel, however, suffered a ski break three kilometers from the finish and lost valuable minutes while waiting for a replacement ski. The third team was the second season of the Bavarian Ski Association. The teams Bayern III (3:27:59 hrs), Harz (3:32:49 hrs), Black Forest II , Swabia II , Harz II , Black Forest III and West Germany I ranked in the following places . There were 14 teams at the start.

With the “Golden Ski”, Helmut Böck received the highest award in German winter sports. After the combination jump on the small Hochfirstschanze had to be postponed from Friday to Saturday, the 15 km cross-country skiing took place first. The best mileage was shown by Hermann Möchel (57:22 min), who, however, unsurprisingly fell back to eighth place after the jump run. After Böck (58:55 min) was only 2.5 points ahead of last year's winner Heinz Hauser (59:16 min), an exciting ski jumping event could be expected. However, the representative of SC Nesselwang showed the best jumping performance with 48 and 52 meters in front of Hauser (49.5 and 48.5 m) and Christian Lehnert (48 and 49.5 m) and thus became German champions with a 4.4 point lead .

Toni Brutscher won the German championship title on the large Hochfirstschanze , which was prepared with great effort and expense. Even during the second run, in which 31 jumpers started, there were problems with fresh snow that blunted the inrun track. Nevertheless, the 15,000 or so spectators saw outstanding performances such as Brutscher's jump on 89 meters, with which he missed Franz Eder's hill record by just one meter. The Bavarian champion Max Bolkart could not intervene in the fight for the title after he could not stand the jump at 90 meters in the first round. Sepp Schiffner (73 and 72 meters; 189.7 points) started out of competition.
