history

Whether the medieval village was affected during the Hungarian invasions around 910, as can sometimes be read in the literature, can no longer be determined with certainty. Gmund and Pastor Gerwig were first mentioned in writing in 1075 in a document. It is assumed, however, that the parish is older. It was incorporated into the Tegernsee monastery in 1274 , but priests of the Freising diocese provided pastoral care until 1657. Only from 1657 to the secularization of 1803 did religious priests of the Tegernsee monastery work in Gmund. As early as 1321, sovereign jurisdiction was largely transferred to the monastery. During the Thirty Years' War in 1632 the parish suffered from incursions by Swedish cavalry that burned down parts of the village and the church. In 1634 the plague raged, which killed numerous residents of the parish of Gmund. In 1693 the Freising Auxiliary Bishop Sigmund Zeller consecrated today's church of St. Egidius. Men from Gmund were also involved in the peasant uprising of 1705. 1100 Bavarians were killed in the Sendlinger Murder Christmas , including 28 rebels from Gmund. From 1784 to 1806 Father Leonhard Buchberger worked as a pastor in Gmund, who also made a name for himself as a learned writer. After secularization in 1803, Gmund became part of a community that had its seat in Ostin and was also called that. In 1809 Waakirchen was separated from the Gmund parish as a separate parish.

Name change

On June 14, 1926, the municipality of Ostin was officially renamed Gmund am Tegernsee at its own request . Ostin was now a district of Gmund.

Incorporations

On May 1, 1978, the previously independent municipality of Dürnbach was incorporated.

Population development

Between 1988 and 2018 the community grew from 5,485 to 6,089 by 604 inhabitants or 11%.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Gmund am Tegernsee
Blazon : "In blue over silver waves, two silver sea leaves intertwined with the stems, topped by a golden crown with lily-shaped leaves."

The waves symbolize the location of the community on the Tegernsee and on the upper reaches of the Mangfall, which begins as an outflow from the Tegernsee near Gmund. The two entwined sea leaves (water lily leaves) and the golden crown are borrowed from the coat of arms of the Benedictine Abbey of Tegernsee. Seeblätter and Krone underscore the once great importance of the Tegernsee Monastery for the community of Gmund.

Partner municipality

The municipality has officially maintained a partnership with the Italian municipality of Fauglia in Tuscany since 2010 .

Parish Church of St. Giles

The parish church of St. Egidius was built in the Baroque style from 1688 to 1692 by the builder Lorenzo Sciasca from Graubünden and is the oldest church in the area around Lake Tegernsee . The church was consecrated in 1693 to the Benedictine abbot Aegidius . The exterior of the church is rather simple and modest, even if the church towers over the village of Gmund due to its mountain location. The interior of the towerless wall pillar church appears spacious and clearly structured by the framing of the vaults. The painting “History of the Holy Aegid” on the high altar (1692) is a work by Hans Georg Asam . The side altars are from the 18th century. From 1998 to 2001 the church was completely renovated in the baroque style. The first stone church stood on this site as early as 1087. Around the current church there is a cemetery with old and traditional graves, which is surrounded by a wall.

Evangelical Church of the Redeemer

In the church there is a crucifix by the sculptor Karl Hemmeter .

Maria-Hilf chapel

The small chapel at the foot of the parish church of St. Egidius is right on the main road. It was built in 1634 as a plague chapel and has been used as a war memorial chapel since 1918. A prayer is carved in stone above the entrance of the simple chapel. The church tower is made of wood or clad with wood. At the front of the street is written "Honor the Victims - Reminder the Living". Inside are stone tablets with the names of the dead and missing from the wars of 1918 and 1939/45 from different communities (Gmund, Moosrain, Dürnbach, Finsterwald, Georgenried, Louisenthal and others). The fallen of the Second World War from the communities of Gmund and Dürnbach are also shown with pictures. From 1988 to 1991 the chapel was renovated.
