Life

Anton Rieppel was born in 1852 as the fourth of the six children of Theresia and Albert Rieppel. He grew up in a technical and industrial environment, which had a decisive impact on his career. He finished the trade school in two years as the best in his class in Wunsiedel and in 1869 Rieppel went to the industrial school in Munich . In 1871 Rieppel began studying at the Polytechnic in Munich (today Technical University of Munich ), which he left in 1874 to the horror of the then founder and director Karl Maximilian von Bauernfeind . He passed the final exam in 1875 with a grade of one.

From 1874 Rieppel worked for the "Süddeutsche Brückenbau-Aktiengesellschaft" in Munich. At the end of 1876 he went to Gustavsburg near Mainz , where he took over the management of the “Gustavsburg Bridge Construction Company” (later MAN plant Gustavsburg ) and in 1885 was appointed director. In 1889 Rieppel was also a member of the “Maschinenbau AG Nürnberg”, of which he was appointed sole director in 1892. After the merger with the "Maschinenfabrik Augsburg", from 1898 he managed the Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg AG together with Heinrich von Buz . In 1899 he was awarded the Grashof Memorial Medal from the Association of German Engineers . From 1913 to 1920, Anton von Rieppel was in charge of the entire group. In 1915 he led the production of trucks in Nuremberg (in today's MAN engine plant ) and from 1916/17 was involved in the development of the two-stroke marine diesel engines in Augsburg. (see also: Diesel engines for the Imperial Navy )

Rieppel was the chief engineer for the viaduct near Müngsten , which was completed in 1897 , using a cantilever (for the first time in an arched bridge). In 1897 he received a patent for the "Rieppel -träger", which was used in the construction of the Wuppertal suspension railway and the Dresden suspension railway . With Heinrich Gottfried Gerber , Rieppel was one of the founders of the “Gustavsburg School” of steel bridge construction.

Rieppel founded and directed a number of industrial associations. Until 1926 he was a member of the supervisory board of Siemens-Schuckertwerke GmbH. In 1906 Rieppel received the Bavarian personal nobility.

From 1901 to 1919 Rieppel was a member of the board of directors of the Central Association of German Industrialists and played a leading role in the Pan-German Association . In 1907 Anton von Rieppel became chairman of the Bavarian Association of Industrialists (BIV), and in 1911 chairman of the General Association of German Metal Industries . In 1911 von Rieppel suggested the establishment of the garden city Werderau in Nuremberg. From 1915 to 1917 he was chairman of the Association of German Engineers (VDI), after being a board member in 1897 and 1898.

He died on January 31, 1926 in his Nuremberg apartment and was buried in the Johannisfriedhof (Nuremberg) .
