The Grashof Memorial Medal is the highest award of the Association of German Engineers (VDI). It was donated in 1894 in memory of Franz Grashof (co-founder and first director of the VDI from 1856 to 1890) and has since been awarded to 99 men (as of October 2018) as a token of recognition and thanks for outstanding scientific or professional achievements in the technical field. The award is not tied to membership in the VDI and not to German citizenship .

From gold embossed coin on the obverse the portrait of Franz Grashof surrounded by a wreath of oak leaves . The name of the respective owner and the year of the award as well as the inscription "Verein Deutscher Ingenieure - Grashof-Denkmünze" are embossed on the back. The miniature version is a scaled down minted gold coin on a blue ribbon.

The Grashof Memorial Medal is awarded within the framework of the German Engineers' Day and after a resolution by the VDI Presidium and the consent of all living owners.
