Richard Grammel (born March 3, 1889 in Klosterreichenbach , † June 26, 1964 in Stuttgart ) was a German physicist .

Career

Grammel came from an émigré family expelled from the Salzburg region in the 16th century. His father Christian was mayor in Klosterreichenbach. He attended grammar schools in Reutlingen and Ulm and then studied mathematics and physics at the universities in Munich and Tübingen as well as at the technical universities of Stuttgart and Munich . In 1913 he received his doctorate in Tübingen with a thesis on n-dimensional vector symbolism , in 1916 he completed his habilitation at the Technical University of Danzig with the thesis Additions to Gyro Theory with an application to ballistics .

As a private lecturer, he started teaching at the University of Halle in 1917 . In 1920 he accepted a call as a full professor of technical mathematics and thermodynamics at the TH Stuttgart, which remained his scientific home until his retirement in 1957. In 1929/30 and from 1945 to 1948 he was the rector of the university.

Grammel worked in particular on the gyro theory , the theory of torsional vibrations and problems of technical dynamics.

He was editor of the volumes Mechanics and the Handbook of Physics and from 1929 editor of the journal Ingenieur-Archiv . From 1920 he was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . In 1950 he became a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1958 he was accepted as a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .

As a representative of the universities, he was a member of the provisional parliament for Württemberg-Baden in 1946 .
