Herbert Gottlieb Friedrich Gassert (born February 12, 1929 in Stuttgart ; † January 17, 2011 ) was a German industrial manager . From 1980 to 1987 he was CEO of the German subsidiary of Brown, Boveri & Cie. (BBC) in Mannheim-Käfertal .

Life

The son of a master baker attended the Eberhard-Ludwigs-Gymnasium in his hometown and studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Stuttgart from 1949 to 1955 . During his studies he was involved in student representatives and was among other things chairman of the Association of German Student Unions (VDS) in 1953/54 .

After graduating, Gassert initially worked as a scientific assistant at the chair for heat and fluid flow machines (Prof. Ulrich Senger ) at the Technical University of Stuttgart and, after completing his doctorate in 1963, joined Brown, Boveri & Cie AG (BBC) in Mannheim as a test engineer. In 1967 he took over the management of a design department for gas turbines and in 1970 became director of the business unit thermal machines and turbo groups. Since 1974 General Representative, Gassert moved up in 1976 first as a deputy and in 1979 as a full member of the board of the German BBC. In mid-1980 Gassert finally succeeded the previous chairman of the board, Hans K. Göhringer, at the helm of what was then the third largest German electronics company.

In the following years the BBC got into a serious crisis due to loss-making failures in the construction of large-scale plants and power plants. The Swiss parent company reacted to this in the mid-1980s with a profound restructuring that massively restricted the independence of the German subsidiary. After the surprising merger with the Swedish Asea group to form Asea Brown Boveri (ABB), Gassert left the company at the end of 1987 and moved to the supervisory board (until 1995). Eberhard von Koerber became the new CEO of the German BBC Brown Boveri AG .

After leaving BBC, Gassert took on various supervisory board mandates, including at Hennigsdorfer Stahl GmbH , Mannesmann Anlagenbau AG, Düsseldorf, and Rheinische Hypothekenbank AG, Frankfurt. He also held numerous honorary functions in the Association of German Engineers , in the Federal Association of German Industry , was chairman of the Association of Technical Monitoring Associations and was a member of the presidium of DIN and the Science Council.

Gassert had been with Ingeborg, born in 1961. Hate being married and having two sons and a daughter with her.
