Otto H. Schiele

Otto Helmut Schiele (born June 25, 1922 in Baden-Baden ; † June 4, 2012 in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse ) was a German industrial manager .

Life

Otto H. Schiele was the son of the gardener Otto Schiele and his wife Ottilie, née Dietrich. Before graduating from high school for boys Graf Zeppelin in Baden-Baden in 1940, he acquired the glider license A, B and C.

In 1940 Schiele was drafted into the military. In accordance with his previous training, he joined the Air Force after training as a recruit in Olomouc . He acquired the A, B and C tickets as well as the blind ticket. At the flight instructor academy in Brandenburg-Briest , he was trained as a flight instructor and blind flight instructor. He pursued this activity in Wiener Neustadt . Shortly before the end of the war, Schiele was trained as a fighter pilot at the hunting school in Pomerania and in Roth , as well as long-haul flights in Copenhagen . He was then transferred to Jagdgeschwader 1 . Here he also took part in the Wilde-Sau night hunting process. When equipping the fighter squadron with jet fighters in Rostock , the third group was surprised by the advancing Soviet troops , but Schiele and another pilot were able to fly two Messerschmitt Me 262s to Leck . The Leck Air Base was then without a fight from the British occupied, after a short captivity Schiele was dismissed.

Studies and professional career

Schiele was unable to study aircraft construction after the war , as this was prohibited by the Allies in post-war Germany. Instead he studied mechanical engineering , economics and meteorology at the Technical University of Karlsruhe from 1946 . There he was on May 22, 1951 co-founder and flight instructor of the new Academic Aviation Group , member of the student council and member of the Arminia fraternity . In addition to his studies, he worked as an assistant and chief engineer.

After completing his doctorate in engineering, Schiele was head of the Institute for Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Machines at the Technical University of Karlsruhe for four years. In 1959 Schiele switched to KSB Aktiengesellschaft . In 1968 he became head of Central Research and Design and in 1972 a member of the board.

Voluntary work

Otto Schiele was involved in voluntary work nationwide. He worked in committees of the Fraunhofer Society and the German Research Foundation and was a member of the EC Commission . He was also a foundation advisor to the KSB Foundation .

His honorary positions included the presidency of the Association of German Mechanical and Plant Engineering from 1983 to 1986, the chairmanship of the technology advisory board of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate , the vice-presidency of the BDI , the presidency of the working group of industrial research associations "Otto von Guericke" from 1986 to 1994 and chairman of the Board of Trustees from 1995 to 2002.

Honors

In 1969 Otto Schiele became honorary professor at the University of Karlsruhe. He also served since June 26, 1982 Honorary Chairman of the Academic Flying Group at the University of Karlsruhe eV in 1987 awarded him the Technical University of Darmstadt , the honorary doctorate . In 1993 he was awarded the Grashof Memorial Medal by the Association of German Engineers .

On April 4, 1996 he was presented with the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany awarded by Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker . He was a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) .
