Bruno Otto Braun (born August 26, 1942 in Bietigheim ) is a German engineer and manager. From 2007 to 2012 he was President of the Association of German Engineers (VDI).

Life

Before graduating from high school, he did an apprenticeship as a mechanic. After graduating from high school, he began studying mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Stuttgart in 1963 . After diploma in 1968 and doctorate to Dr.-Ing. In 1972 he completed his habilitation in 1976 when he was awarded the Venia Legendi "Steam generator technology". In 1980 he was appointed professor by the Faculty of Energy Technology at the University of Stuttgart.

After completing his habilitation in 1976, he began working at Vereinigte Kesselwerke AG in Düsseldorf. Just four years later he became a member of the board. In 1982 he became a board member of Deutsche Babcock-Werke AG in Oberhausen. In 1985 he moved to Sempell AG as chairman of the board and five years later to Lentjes AG, also as chairman of the board. From 1993 to the end of 2009 he was the chairman of the board of TÜV Rheinland Holding AG . At the beginning of 2010 he took over the chairmanship of the supervisory board and has been chairman of the board of directors of TÜV Rheinland Berlin Brandenburg Pfalz e. V. as the sole shareholder of TÜV Rheinland AG.

Braun has been Honorary Consul of the Republic of Latvia since 1994 . In 2003 he was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany . For his services as President of the German-Belgian-Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce Abroad, he was awarded the title "Commander of the Leopold II Order " in 2009 . In 2013 he received the Grashof Memorial Medal from the Association of German Engineers . In 2015 he was honored with the Great Federal Cross of Merit.

From May 2007 to the end of 2012 Braun was President of the Association of German Engineers (VDI). Since May 2010 he has also been chairman of the German Association of Technical and Scientific Associations .

Since 2010 he has been the German co-chair of the Sino-German Dialog Forum, an advisory body for the governments of both countries.

Braun is a member of the board of trustees of the aid organization CARE Germany .
