CARE Germany e. V. is a German non-governmental organization that provides development cooperation and emergency aid . As one of 14 sister organizations, it belongs to the “ CARE International ” network in Geneva .

The organization claims to be a politically, religiously and ethically independent aid organization . The mission statement says: “We see ourselves as advocates for the people in regions and countries marked by hunger, poverty and oppression. When working with these people, our project partners, donors and employees, we are guided by the following values: respect, integrity, commitment and quality. "

history

On August 29, 1980, CARE Germany was founded as the third CARE organization after the USA and Canada. CARE International is today an association of 14 independently operating national CARE organizations, so-called member organizations. These include CARE USA (1945), Canada (1946), Germany (1980), Norway (1980), France (1983), Great Britain (1985), Austria (1986), Australia (1987), Japan (1987), Denmark ( 1988), Netherlands (2001), Thailand (2003), India (2011) and Peru (2015). In order to do justice to the international profile of the originally American organization, the third and, for the time being, last renaming took place in 1992 as “Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere”.

structure

The organs and committees are the general assembly, the administrative board, the board of trustees and the full-time executive board. The board of directors is elected by the general assembly. It consists of nine members with a presidium at the head of the president, two vice-presidents and the chairman of the finance committee. He appoints the full-time board of directors, consisting of the general secretary and a deputy general secretary. The executive board represents CARE Germany in and out of court. The board of trustees advises the executive board and the administrative board . Winfried Polte has been the Chairman of the Board of Directors since September 2017 . Heribert Scharrenbroich has chaired the Board of Trustees since November 2013 . Rita Süssmuth is the patron . The board of trustees includes a large number of personalities from the fields of politics, business, science and society. The annual general meeting determines the guidelines of CARE Germany. It is the highest supervisory and decision-making body. The board of directors assumes the supervisory function between the general meetings. In addition, an independent auditor commissioned by the Board of Directors reviews the annual financial statements.

Project work and countries

The association concentrates on the areas of emergency aid and poverty reduction . Emergency aid should include "[...] disaster prevention , emergency aid and the subsequent reconstruction aid ". Long-term collaborations are concluded with local partners so that help can be provided quickly and effectively in an emergency. In 2018, CARE International worked in 95 countries and reached 56 million people with 950 aid projects. CARE Germany implemented 125 of its own projects in 36 crisis regions. The focus is on the areas of gender equality, education, nutrition, climate change and emergency aid. For example, CARE works in the Dadaab refugee camp in northern Kenya and improves the water supply there. In Vietnam and Cambodia, CARE is training communities on how to better prepare for natural disasters with evacuation plans and protective measures. In Latin America, CARE supports indigenous communities to independently implement projects that improve the living conditions of the often marginalized ethnic groups. In Yemen, CARE supports women’s groups who are responsible for water management in their villages. In the Balkans, the association works for the Roma ethnic group and promotes peace work.

financing

The aid projects are financed by private and corporate donations as well as by public donors such as the Federal Government and the European Union . In 2018, the income amounted to around 49.83 million euros.

CARE Germany is a member of the German Donation Council and has been awarded the donation certificate for transparency. The certificate proves the trustworthy and transparent handling of donations.

Membership in associations and partnerships

In addition to belonging to CARE International, CARE Germany is involved in the alliances Aktion Deutschland Hilft (ADH) and Together for Africa . The organization is also a member of the Association for Development Policy and Humanitarian Aid of German Non- Governmental Organizations (VENRO) and the Civil Peace Service Forum (fZFD). CARE also takes part in the global education campaign, the “No to circumcision of girls” campaign and the “ Tax against poverty ” campaign. At the European level, CARE is a member of “Concord”. CARE Germany e. V. is involved in the Global Compact initiative and is a signatory of the Transparent Civil Society Initiative .

Prominent supporters

The author and publicist Roger Willemsen supported the campaign “Bonner for Afghanistan” in 2005 and in 2009 he visited a CARE project in Nepal. The cabaret artist Horst Schroth carried out an educational project for children in Argentina with CARE for four years and supports the “Kick it” project in South Africa, a care and AIDS awareness project for young people near Pretoria. The project was also funded by the Bundesliga Foundation .

At the beginning of 2014, Steffen Groth supported the Young Men Initiative with young people in Kosovo . In a ten-day acting workshop, he treated the young men with common gender stereotypes and everyday problems such as drugs and violence . The project was accompanied by the WDR .

CARE affair

Since 2007, the association has been publishing the CARE affair magazine series in its own editorial work . So far there have been issues on the subjects of AIDS, water, learning, hunger, sport, women, young, money, home, intimate and power. Apart from the typical visual language of development aid, people, countries and global contexts are shown here. CARE affair has already received the Red Dot Design Award, the IF Design Award and the Vida Paper Award twice for the creative implementation . In addition, CARE affair was nominated for the design award of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2009 and 2010 . In 2012, CARE affair was awarded the “Gold” award in the “Gute Gestaltung” competition of the German Designer Club . In 2013, CARE affair was repeatedly awarded the “Bronze” award in the “Gute Gestaltung” competition.

CARE Millennium Award / Partnership Award

Every two years since 2007, the association has honored personalities and partner organizations who are particularly committed to achieving the Millennium Development Goals . The prizes have been awarded alternately since 2010. Prize winners were:

Awards

In 1999 the organization received a public award for aid to Russia from then President Boris Yeltsin . CARE Germany e. V. was awarded 1st place in the transparency prize in 2008 , which is awarded annually by the auditing company PricewaterhouseCoopers . After CARE took part out of competition for a few years due to the award in 2008, the organization applied regularly for the first time in 2012 and took second place together with UNICEF.

German CARE Foundation

The German CARE Foundation , based in Bonn, was founded in 1997 and is an independent foundation under civil law. The foundation's assets amount to 343,927 euros (2018).
