action medeor eV (medeor: lat. "I heal") is, according to its own information, the largest medical aid organization in Europe and, as the "emergency pharmacy of the world", is committed to providing medicines and medical equipment, development aid projects and pharmaceutical advice for the health care of people in developing countries a.

history

On August 13, 1964, the organization was founded by Ernst Boekels in Tönisvorst - Vorst , where the association is still located today. In the early days, medicines were first collected, sorted and sent to health stations abroad. Since the medication donated often did not meet the needs of the health stations, it was decided in 1967 to produce the generic drugs required by ourselves . In 1974 the first 2,000 m² warehouse for medicines was built. In 1988, Else Eberle's legacy enabled the warehouse to be expanded and doubled.

In 2005 action medeor International Healthcare gGmbH was founded, a branch of action medeor in Tanzania , which supplies medicines and medical material to health facilities in the country via branches with its own drug stores in the capital Dar es Salaam as well as in Masasi and Makambako. Action medeor has also had its own branch in Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi , since 2015 .

In 2015 action medeor celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Organization and work areas

Since 1964, the association has supplied over 10,000 health stations in 140 countries. In the 4,000 m² drug store in Tönisvorst, over 200 different drugs and over 400 medical supplies are stored. Emergency packages are also available there, which in the event of a disaster can be sent to the crisis region within 24 hours.

Medication aid

The association supplies hospitals and health stations in Africa, Latin America and Asia with medical equipment and drugs that, according to the World Health Organization, are essential for basic medical care. The drugs are either generics , which are manufactured on behalf of action medeor, or goods donated from the pharmaceutical industry. The drugs are given to the health stations at cost price or financed through donations.

Emergency and disaster relief

In humanitarian crisis situations, the organization sends aid deliveries with medicines and medical equipment to the affected regions. In the medicine store in Tönisvorst, emergency packages are permanently available that can be sent within 24 hours. The so-called Emergency Health Kits contain a. Basic medication such as pain relievers , antibiotics , infusion solutions and water sterilization tablets as well as bandages. In cooperation with partner organizations in the disaster area, action medeor also coordinates the distribution of medicines.

As part of the civil war in Syria, action medeor has been sending aid deliveries to the war zone and refugee camps in the Syrian-Turkish border area since 2012; hospitals and health facilities are also supported in cooperation with local organizations. After the earthquake in Nepal in 2015 , the drug relief organization sent relief supplies to the affected regions and opened a local drug distribution station. Together with ISAR Germany , action medeor set up a mobile isolation ward in Monrovia during the Ebola fever epidemic in 2014 . In the emergency aid after Cyclone Idai in 2019, action medeor also provided medical relief supplies from the drug store in Germany and from the branches in Tanzania and Malawi.

Development cooperation

Together with local partner organizations, the organization carries out health projects in Africa, Latin America and Asia. The focus of the project work is the establishment of stable basic health care, the fight against infectious diseases such as malaria and HIV / AIDS, the improvement of mother-child health and education in the field of water and hygiene as well as disease prevention. As part of development cooperation, action medeor also supports the training of specialist staff and health workers, for example by setting up a midwifery school in Sierra Leone.

Pharmaceutical advice

The organization promotes improving access to medicines in developing countries . For this purpose, the drug relief organization supports the training and further education of pharmaceutical specialists, e.g. B. through cooperation with the universities in Dar es Salaam and Kumasi . Other measures include advice and training on drug production, the design and construction of production facilities for basic drugs and the upgrading of development and control laboratories.

Ambassador Anke Engelke

Actress and presenter Anke Engelke has been supporting the association's work since 2003 . As an advertising ambassador, she visits aid projects on site, most recently in Malawi in 2017. Engelke is particularly involved in malaria aid. As a celebrity candidate in the RTL quiz show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? already raised 1.75 million euros for action medeor, most recently 500,000 euros in June 2015.
