Ernst Boekels

Ernst Heinrich Boekels (born December 25, 1927 in Krefeld ; † May 5, 2019 in Tönisvorst ) was a German general practitioner and founder of the drug aid organization " action medeor ".

life and work

Ernst Heinrich Boekels was born in Krefeld in December 1927 as the youngest of seven children. In 1934 he started school at the St. Tönis boys' school , and from 1937 he attended the secondary school in Krefeld. In February 1945 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and in April 1945 was taken prisoner by the Americans. After his release in June 1945, he graduated from high school.

In April 1947 Boekels traveled to Eichstätt , received a place at the philosophical-theological college and did his preliminary physics in the following two semesters . From there he moved to Regensburg in 1948 to complete the Physikum there. He then studied until the state examination, which he passed in 1953, in Düsseldorf .

After working as a doctor in Viersen , Kempen and Menden , he established himself as a general practitioner in Tönisvorst in 1959.

In 1963 Boekels began collecting medical samples, sorting them and sending them to people in need in developing countries. The association " action medeor eV ", which Ernst Boekels founded on August 13, 1964, emerged from these activities . Until 1986 he was chairman of the association, but even after that he continued to be privately involved in “action medeor”.

During his time as club chairman, he traveled to India, South America, the Philippines, Bangladesh, China, Hong Kong, the Congo, Tanzania, Peru, Argentina, Paraguay, Burundi and Rwanda, among others . During a stay in Calcutta he got to know Mother Teresa , whom he also hosted on a later visit from her to Germany.

Ernst Boekels has received many awards for his commitment to “action medeor”, including the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia , the Federal Cross of Merit First Class and the Cross of Honor of the Austrian Albert Schweitzer Society .

In 1998 Ernst Boekels retired. He died on May 5, 2019 in Tönisvorst.
