The German Designer Club (DDC) is an association promoting “good design ” and “good designer” in German-speaking countries.
History and objectives of the association
The association was founded in 1989 by Tassilo von Grolman , Lothar Erdmann , Olaf Leu , Gerd A. Müller (†), Christian Steguweit, Joachim Stenger and Hans Welling (†) with the aim of promoting “good design ”. Not only does it have its “artistic” value, it is also an indispensable, even driving factor in economic success. The association networks different design disciplines and promotes interdisciplinary communication. The aim is to work with clients and training centers for designers to improve the quality of the design. The DDC organizes an annual competition and issues specialist publications.
The association is run on a voluntary basis by a board of directors who was elected on June 1, 2017 at the Merz Akademie Stuttgart and whose spokesperson is Nicolas Markwald (as of December 2017).
Organization of design competitions
In 2000, the association held the design competition Gute Gestaltung for the first time with a focus on networked communication . Since then, the competition has been held annually and, in addition to designers and clients from Germany, is also aimed at designers from Austria and Switzerland . Submissions are made in ten categories: product, digital media, film, advertising, space / architecture, corporate communication, annual reports, corporate design, excellent arts, future (student work). In addition to awards and medals, the highest distinction, the Grand Prix , is presented every year . The German Designer Club regularly awards a well-known designer for his life's work with an honorary membership of the association.
The competition has been included since 2008 as part of the ranking of Page magazine for the annual selection of the fifty most creative German agencies and design offices and as a competition for the horizon ranking. The works awarded by the DCC are published in the annual competition documentation Gute Gestaltung and presented in the exhibition series Gute Gestaltung on tour . The price and publication are associated with costs for the submitter.
The DDC also acted as patron of the Visual Music Award and organizes internal competitions.
Publication activity
The association sees a focus of its work in the issuing of specialist publications, magazines and monographs. The entries submitted for the Gute Gestaltung competition and the award winners in the various categories are published in the bilingual documentation Gute Gestaltung - derived from the German Design Book . In recent years, the association has also published a thematic series of publications on the history of design and monographs by important designers. The association's publications are partly in cooperation with Birkhäuser Verlag and can be found in many libraries.

In addition to the competition, which is reported on in specialist publications, the publications and meetings, the DDC also works through its teaching members (around 40 out of 200). The association is a member of the German Design Council and cooperates with other partners in line with its goals.
