Hermann Frahm (born December 8, 1867 in Büdelsdorf , † December 28, 1939 in Hamburg or Remscheid ) was a German machine and shipbuilder.

Live and act

Hermann Frahm was a son of Hans Frahm (1822–1886) and his wife Auguste Wiebke Margarethe, née Voss (1833–1877). The father worked as a carpenter on the Vorwerk in Büdelsdorf and as a shipbuilder in Fockbeck . His uncle Ernst Voss co-founded the Blohm + Voss shipyard .

Frahm attended a secondary school in Rendsburg and then completed a three-year apprenticeship as a precision mechanic at Dennert and Pape in Altona and a mechanical engineer at Blohm + Voss. From 1887 to 1890 he studied mechanical engineering and shipbuilding at the TH Hannover with privy councilor Prof. Dr. Ing.W. Rhien. He then worked for half a year as an engineer at Blohm + Voss and then as a designer at Haniel and Lueg in Düsseldorf .

In 1892 Frahm took over the management of the mechanical engineering of the Cologne port from the city of Cologne . In 1898 he went back to Hamburg and worked again at Blohm + Voss. He headed the scientific testing department at the shipyard. He was particularly concerned with research on vibrations in machines and wave lines. In the process, he invented several measuring devices, including a frequency meter or the vibration tachometer.

In 1904 Frahm was appointed Technical Director at Blohm + Voss. At the beginning of the 20th century he invented the rolling tank , which became his most important invention. He thus created the basis for many optimizations in shipbuilding. Another important invention was the optical torsion indicator, which made it possible to determine torsional vibrations in waveguides. In 1936 he retired.

Honors

  • The technical universities of Hanover and Berlin appointed Frahm in 1922 as Dr. Ing. Eh
  • The Shipbuilding Society awarded him the Golden Medal in 1924.
  • The Association of German Engineers awarded him the Grashof commemorative coin for his services to the development of vibration research.
  • Due to his organizational success at the shipyard, he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class during the First World War .
