Live and act

Wolfgang-Adam Töpffer was born as the son of Georg-Christoph, master tailor in Schweinfurt , and Marguerite Dubochet. He married Charlotte-Antoinette Counis, daughter of a Saxon needler.

At the age of 14 he completed an apprenticeship as an etcher with Jean-François Hess and Isaac-Jacob Lacroix in Geneva and with François Lardy and Carl Hackert in Lausanne . He then worked in the Geneva bookshop.

In 1786, the Geneva Société des Arts made it possible for him to stay in Paris . During a three-year internship with the etcher Nicolas Delaunay, Töpffer made contact with Parisian artistic circles. He learned watercolor painting from the architect Jean-Thomas Thibaut. In June 1789 he returned to Geneva.

In 1792 he accompanied the landscape painter Pierre-Louis De la Rive on his study trips.

After the Helvetic Republic in 1798 , he remained without commissions.

He was engaged in oil painting and created caricatures, which he exhibited in Geneva in 1798. In the Salon du Louvre he showed a sepia drawing.
