Ernst Voss (entrepreneur)

Ernst Voss (born January 12, 1842 in Fockbek ; † August 1, 1920 in Hamburg ) was a co-founder of the Blohm & Voss shipyard .

Ernst Voss, born in Fockbek near Rendsburg as the son of a farrier, completed an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering and began studying at the Polytechnic in Zurich in 1863 . High technical understanding, iron energy and ambition helped him to graduate early and obtain his diploma .

To deepen his knowledge he went to England , where he worked as a mechanical engineer in the shipbuilding industry. a. at Gwynne and R.Elder & Co.

Ernst Voss returned to Germany in 1869 and began building the Blohm & Voss shipyard in 1877 together with his partner Hermann Blohm . A special merit is the construction of the dock construction , extremely important for fast docking and repairing the ships.

The two engineers Hermann Blohm and Ernst Voss complemented each other in the best way, Hermann Blohm with great entrepreneurship and family financial backing, Ernst Voss as an excellent designer with extensive experience in the field of mechanical engineering and shipbuilding .

Ernst Voss was buried in the Ohlsdorf cemetery in Hamburg. (Grave place: T23 (33-50)).
