Michael Schenk (born April 16, 1953 in Roßlau (Elbe) ) is a German researcher and university professor. From 1994 to 2019 he was head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation (IFF). From 2003 to 2019 he was appointed university professor - chair for logistic systems - at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg .

Life

Michael Schenk grew up in Dessau and then went to study mathematics at the Technical University "Otto-von-Guericke" Magdeburg, today Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg . After doctorate and habilitation with Prof. Eberhard Gottschalk, he was appointed professor for production process control at the same institution in 1989. In the following year he received the research award from Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg.

Michael Schenk was a key force behind the establishment of the Fraunhofer IFF as one of the first eight institutes in the new federal states and the first in Saxony-Anhalt. When it was founded as an institute in 1992, he took over the management of the logistics, production planning and control department. In 1994 he took up the post of director of the institute. At the same time, he was appointed professor for the field of factory planning and logistics at the Institute for Ergonomics, Factory Automation and Factory Operation at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. Michael Schenk shaped logistics at the latest when he was appointed university professor - Chair of Logistic Systems - at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg in 2003. In the same year, as head of the Fraunhofer IFF, he initiated the expansion of the Virtual Development and Training Center ( Fraunhofer VDTC), which since then offers a unique 360 ​​° environment for virtual planning and training. The expansion also set an anchor for the successful Magdeburg Science Port development project.

From 2013 to 2019 Michael Schenk did a great job as chairman of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft's Production Group. Michael Schenk is the author and editor of scientific books and articles on production and logistics. Through his work in committees, he actively contributes to the further development of applied research in the disciplines. His strong commitment to science and society has received extensive honors.
