Life

From 1919 to 1923 Gustav Niemann studied mechanical engineering at the TU Darmstadt . At that time he was involved in the youth movement reformed Wieland University Guild . In 1928 he received his doctorate from the TH Berlin . The title of the dissertation was: About luffing cranes with a horizontal load path . From 1934 to 1950 he was a professor at the University of Braunschweig . Since 1949 he was a member of the Braunschweig Scientific Society . From 1951 to 1968 he held the chair of machine elements at the Technical University of Munich . Always keeping the designer's way of thinking and working in mind, in 1965 he succeeded in introducing his own chair for design engineering at the TH Munich. The research center for gears and gear manufacturing is affiliated.

Gustav Niemann has received several awards, for example in 1966 with the Grashof Medal from the Association of German Engineers (VDI) and the EP Connell Medal from the American Gear Manufacturers Association (as the first non-American). The Technical University of Munich named the lecture hall MW0001 of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering after Gustav Niemann in his honor. In 1991, the H.-und-H.-Hiersig-Stiftung established the Gustav-Niemann-Förderpreis des VDI, which is awarded every two years as an award for final or research work in the field of mechanical drive technology.
