Fredrik Ljungström
Fredrik Ljungström (born June 16, 1875 in Stockholm , † February 18, 1964 there ) was a Swedish engineer , designer and industrialist .
Together with his brother Birger he developed the Ljungström turbine named after them , the first fully automatic motor vehicle transmission and the Svea bicycle . In 1921 he designed a steam turbine locomotive based on his turbine .
For his services he was u. a. awarded the James Watt Medal . In 1928 he received an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Dresden . In 1956 he was awarded the Grashof commemorative coin from the Association of German Engineers .
As a passionate sailor, Ljungström conducted intensive research into innovative boat shapes and sail types. He invented the storm jib and developed the Ljungströmkryssare , a streamlined sailboat of which around 200 were built in Sweden until the 1960s. The rig consists of a rotatable mast with a double sail , but does not have a sail boom .
