Svea bicycle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Svea bicycle was a technical variant of the bicycle in the 19th century. It was invented by the brothers Fredrik and Birger Ljungström and already had the frame shape known today ; the drive of the wheel, however, worked on a completely different principle. The inventors used levers , piano wire and eccentrics instead of chain rings , bicycle chains and rear sprockets , as the bicycle chains of that time often broke for various reasons. The bicycle was driven by alternately operating the levers provided with pedals , and braked by pressing both pedals at the same time. The 1892 patented freewheel of the Svea-bicycle was in series produced and held its own on the market until the for about 10 years technological were overcome problems in the production of bicycle chains.
