Strenesse was a German fashion brand from Nördlingen . A branch network of its own shops and upscale retailers offered clothing and accessories for women and men as well as home textiles, perfume, prescription glasses and sunglasses under the brand name Strenesse in the upper middle price segment . The business was last operated by Strenesse New GmbH , which announced after bankruptcy that it would have to cease its business at the end of 2020.

history

Early years

The company was founded in 1949 as Wohlfahrt & Co by the Strehle family and initially specialized in the manufacture of women's coats and costumes . From 1958 it operated under the name Strehle KG . At the end of the 1950s, the range was expanded to include clothing for women. In 1969, Strehle KG combined the company name and the French word for youth, Jeunesse, to form Strenesse for one of the company's fashion lines . In 1972 Strehle KG was renamed Bekleidungswerk Strehle GmbH & Co.KG and the founder's son, Gerd Strehle, joined the company.

Designer brand and heyday

Gabriele Hecke worked for Strenesse from 1973 and became chief designer in 1975. From the late 1970s, the Strenesse collection was expanded under the leadership of Gerd Strehle and Gabriele Hecke. Strehle and Hecke married in 1985. Under Gerd Strehle's commercial management and Gabriele Strehle's creative leadership, the small fashion company developed into an internationally known manufacturer of sleek, elegant designer fashion made from high-quality materials in the following ten years.

In 1993, the less formal women's second line, Strenesse Blue , was introduced, which was led from 2008 to 2012 by Viktoria Strehle, daughter of Gerd Strehle from his first marriage, as the head of a creative team. The collection was shown with interruptions from 2008 to 2012 as part of Berlin Fashion Week . In 2007 the Strenesse main line had already been demonstrated in Berlin. From 1995 the main line for women was presented at the Milan Fashion Weeks. Strenesse Group Italia was founded in Milan for the Italian market . In 1992, shoes and accessories were added to the Strenesse range, partly under license (1996). From the mid-1990s to the early 2000s, economically the most successful times in the company's history to date, annual sales were up to 125 million euros.

In the course of the internationalization of the brand, the main line for women received the addition of the name of the chief designer in 1998: Strenesse Gabriele Strehle . Strenesse finally developed into a designer brand. After changing its name to an AG, Strenesse went public in 2000. A subsidiary for the US market was established in New York and a subsidiary for men's fashion was established in Italy (dissolved in 2006). After Italy, Japan was the strongest selling market for Strenesse fashion at this time. The Strehles all rejected takeover bids from competing firms. In addition to Escada , Hugo Boss , Rena Lange and Joop! Strenesse was one of the few internationally known German fashion brands in the upper segment.

In 2000, Strenesse opened its own stores, initially in Munich. Strenesse has been offering fragrances and cosmetics since 2001. At the end of 2001, Strenesse designed the uniforms for the female ground and flight attendant staff at Lufthansa . In 2002 the men's line was introduced under the name Strenesse Men . The presentation of the first men's collection took place during the Milan Fashion Week. From 2000 to 2004, the Strehles worked closely with the French stylist Marie-Amelie Sauvé, who worked for the French edition of the fashion magazine Vogue , among other things . With her collaboration, for example, the campaign for the autumn / winter 2003 collection with the model Julia Stegner as the face, photographed by the British fashion photographer David Sims, was created. The well-known campaign with Claudia Schiffer and Boris Becker from 2004, photographed by Juergen Teller , was also based on this collaboration. From 2010, the female German model Luca Gadjus graced the campaigns of Strenesse Gabriele Strehle . Aino Laberenz , widow of Christoph Schlingensief , was signed up for the 2015 summer campaign .

Times of crisis from 2003

The international crisis mood as a result of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 also weighed on the Strenesse company, which slipped into the red in the early 2000s. In 2003 Viktoria Strehle joined the company. Between 2003 and 2005 losses of between two and three million euros were recorded. A financial injection from the holding company Santo led by Hexal founders Andreas and Thomas Strüngmann bridged financial bottlenecks. In 2005, Strenesse presented itself at New York Fashion Week .

In the mid-2000s, Strenesse's turnover was only 67 million euros. In 2005 Gerd Strehle appointed the managers Peter Kappler and Marc Höfig as managing directors, but dismissed both of them after a few months and took over the management of the company again. With the men's collection, which generated 6 to 7 million euros in the mid-2000s, the company withdrew at the end of 2006 apart from its own stores, returned from retail and only returned there from the end of 2010 after a relaunch of men's fashion. In 2006, Strenesse glasses appeared for the first time . Between 2006 and 2013, the company was also the official supplier of the German national soccer team and dressed the team for all official appearances on the sidelines. With the 2010 soccer World Cup in South Africa , the company's “blue lucky sweater ”, a V-neck sweater made of cashmere , became a synonym for this cooperation and its wearer, national coach Jogi Löw , became a “style icon” of German football.

In autumn 2009, Strenesse opened an online store on its website, through which all three brands ( Strenesse Gabriele Strehle , Strenesse Blue , Strenesse Men ) and the respective accessories collections as well as Strenesse Gabriele Strehle Eyewear and the fragrance of Strenesse Gabriele Strehle were evicted. In the same year, Gerd Strehle's son from his first marriage, Luca Strehle, joined the company with responsibility for the second line and the licensing business. Most recently, sales of 30 million euros were achieved with the second line Blue . In 2012 there was a cooperation between Strenesse and Loewe on the design of a television set .

New start from 2013

At the end of 2012, and after the private separation of Gerd and Gabriele Strehle, Gabriele Strehle left the company in December and shortly thereafter Viktoria Strehle left the company. Luca Strehle took over the management of the company as chairman of the board together with Erich Sauter as commercial director. Gerd Strehle changed to the chairmanship of the supervisory board . The press reported in autumn 2012 that the Strenesse company was looking for a financially strong investor. With the start of the fall / winter 2013/2014 collection, the womenswear lines “Strenesse Gabriele Strehle” and “Strenesse Blue” were merged into a single collection under the Strenesse brand ; the men's collection has also been operating under the name Strenesse since then . From February 2013 to July 2015 Natalie Acatrini - previously a designer at Jil Sander , Hugo Boss and René Lezard - was creative director at Strenesse. In March 2013, Strenesse AG placed a corporate bond in the amount of 12 million euros in the Open Market of Deutsche Börse in order to service bank loans and a loan, according to press reports. For the 2011/2012 financial year, sales amounted to 60 million euros with an annual loss of 260,000 euros.

The company had showrooms in Munich, Düsseldorf, Milan, New York and Tokyo. Most of the clothing was made in Eastern Europe, the fabrics mainly came from Italy. Around 200 employees worked at the Nördlingen site in the early 2010s; a total of around 400 people were employed by Strenesse. In 2013 the company had 15 of its own Strenesse stores. In the 2011/2012 financial year, the Group's sales amounted to 67 million euros, with a result from ordinary business activities of 0.8 million euros.

Insolvency proceedings 2014

At the beginning of 2014 it became known that Strenesse had problems refinancing a corporate bond due in March and therefore called a creditors' meeting in order to obtain an extension of the deadline. On April 16, 2014, the management filed for insolvency under self-administration . Preliminary insolvency proceedings have been ordered at the district court in Nördlingen . In April 2014, the experienced restructuring engineer Michael Pluta, who among other things had saved Märklin , was appointed to the Strenesse Management Board as Chief Restructuring Officer. In November 2014, Luca Strehle resigned as CEO at Pluta's insistence and switched to the Supervisory Board to clear the way for a fresh start. In July 2015, the Handelsblatt and the Augsburger Allgemeine reported that the company had returned to profitability and that discussions with investors were ongoing. In September 2015, members of the Strehle family dismissed Michael Pluta by taking a corresponding resolution at an extraordinary general meeting. The responsible trustee, the lawyer Jörg Nerlich, refused, however, and Pluta remained in office. The background to this was the Strehle family's fear that Pluta would sell the company to investors who would break it up and not continue it. Pluta had negotiated with the s.Oliver owner Bernd Freier , among others, who would have been willing to take over a complete takeover on November 1, 2015 for 12 million euros, but without the participation of the Strehle family. Without Pluta's knowledge, the Strehle family had negotiated with the Wiesbaden private equity firm Sirius Venture Partners , which had brought in five to seven million euros in capital with the participation of the Strehle family. As part of this alternative concept, Luca Strehle was quoted as saying that Strenesse positioned itself "directly under brands such as Gucci , Prada or Stella McCartney ". In addition, the former Hugo Boss chief designer Kevin Lobo should have taken over the creative leadership at Strenesse. Der Spiegel commented on this in an article as "megalomania from Nördlingen". Pluta left the board in October 2015. His duties were taken over by Chief Financial Officer Gerhard Geuder. In October 2015, the press reported that the company had accumulated an operating loss of 365,000 euros in June and July and that the financial resources would still be sufficient for a maximum of one year to survive. At the end of October 2015, sales talks with an investment company broke up.

In spring 2016 Birgit Kaufmann-Rehm, previously a designer at Clemens en August , was appointed Head of Design at Strenesse, where she heads an eight-person design team. In August 2016 it became known that the Dutch MAEG Holding, which in turn belongs to the Polish investor family Kucharczyk, wanted to buy 80% of the shares in Strenesse. At the beginning of September 2016, the takeover was declared to have failed after no payment had been received from the potential buyer, even after the deadline was extended after August 31, and the latter criticized company figures withheld from him in the press.

New start from 2017 and renewed bankruptcy in 2019

At the beginning of December 2016, the 90% takeover of Strenesse by the Swiss trust company H2P AG was announced. The remaining 10% of the shares in Strenesse New GmbH are held by the former Porsche Design managing director Jürgen Gessler, who also took over the management of Strenesse from 2017. 240 Strenesse employees were taken over. The former owner family is not involved in the new company. In June 2018 Micaela Sabatier took over the management.

In 2019, the company had to file for bankruptcy again. At the end of July 2020, Strenesse announced that it would have to cease operations by the end of 2020.
