The twins Andreas and Thomas Strüngmann (born February 16, 1950 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ) are the founders of the pharmaceutical company Hexal from Holzkirchen in Upper Bavaria. Andreas Strüngmann is a doctor, Thomas Strüngmann is a business economist and marketing specialist.

The identical twins Andreas and Thomas and their older brother Joachim are the sons of Ernst and Gisela Strüngmann. Ernst's father ran the small generics company Durachemie (launched the first generic antibiotic in Germany in 1969). Around 1963 the family moved from Mülheim to Garmisch and later to Tegernsee .

After graduating from high school in Tegernsee , Andreas Strüngmann studied medicine, which he completed with a doctorate. During his studies he got to know the pharmaceutical industry through internships. He completed his internship in South Africa, where he also stayed for a time as a doctor.

Thomas Strüngmann completed his A-levels at the boarding school Schloss Neubeuen . After studying business administration , he obtained a doctorate in business administration. rer. pole. with the dissertation “The prescription behavior of the resident doctor”. In 1979, the brothers joined their father's company, Durachemie. In 1986 they sold the company for 100 million German marks and founded the company Hexal , which rose to become the second largest manufacturer of generics in Germany. In February 2005, the brothers sold the company, including their 68 percent stake in Eon Labs, to Novartis for $ 7.5 billion . Thereafter, both positions were offered at Sandoz , a subsidiary of Novartis, which they did not accept.

In 2006 Forbes Magazine listed the brothers as the 185th richest person in the world, each with $ 3.75 billion in assets. In the 2015 edition, they were ranked 534 at $ 3.1 billion each.

In 2007 the two founded the Ernst Strüngmann Forum , a conference series on contemporary problems affiliated with the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies . The Strüngmann family also owned more than 10 percent of the shares in IVG Immobilien by May 2013 . In addition, the brothers held a 25% stake in Conergy AG from February 2008 via Athos Service GmbH . The stake in the solar company was sold in March 2011 after the reactor disaster in Fukushima.

Through their affiliated companies Santo Holding and Athos Service GmbH , the Strüngmann brothers hold large shares in companies in the biotech and health sector. In 2004 Santo Holding (Deutschland) GmbH bought Südwestbank . In 2014, the brothers invested another 350 million euros in the bank. In July 2017, they sold Südwestbank to the Austrian bank Bawag PSK . No information was given on the purchase price.

In July 2008, the brothers signed a cooperation agreement with the Max Planck Society to establish a private research institute dedicated to medical and scientific projects, primarily in the field of cognitive neurosciences. The headquarters of the facility, named Ernst Strüngmann Institute (ESI gGmbH), which was endowed by the brothers with more than 200 million euros, is Frankfurt am Main . The institute is an associated research facility of the Max Planck Society. The neurophysiologist Pascal Fries has been scientific director of the institute since 2009 . The family office of Andreas and Thomas Strüngmann was involved in BioNTech , which was founded in 2008, with start-up capital of around 180 million US dollars. As recently as July 2020, around 50 percent of Biontech is owned by the two entrepreneurs' asset management.

In 2014, Klinge Pharma was acquired by the Strüngmann brothers along with the products.

Private

Andreas is married and has two children, Thomas has four children. Both brothers live on Tegernsee in Upper Bavaria.
