Juergen Teller (2013)

Juergen Teller (* 1964 in Erlangen ) is a German photographer .

Life

Teller, who came from a family of violin makers , grew up in Bubenreuth near Erlangen and began an apprenticeship as bow maker after school , which he broke off due to a dust allergy. From 1984 to 1986 he studied at the Photo Design Academy in Munich . In September 1986 he moved to London to avoid compulsory military service , where he has lived and worked ever since. Thanks to the photographer Nick Knight , he soon got orders from the music industry and portrayed musicians such as the Cocteau Twins , Sinéad O'Connor and Morrissey for record covers. At the end of the 80s, Teller began taking photos for zeitgeist and fashion magazines such as iD , The Face and Arena.

He met the stylist Venetia Scott, with whom he often worked. They have a daughter together. He is married to Sadie Coles, director of Sadie Coles HQ gallery . With her he has a son.

In 1991 he got the opportunity to accompany the as yet unknown band Nirvana on their Nevermind tour. His portraits of Kurt Cobain later became famous.

The photo series Versace-Heart , created in 1996 on behalf of SZ-Magazin , which in unadorned, quasi-documentary nudes of the model Kristen McMenamy, reproduces the physical exertion that a mannequin has to endure while working on a fashion presentation, made Teller one of the stars of the contemporary Photography. In many of his other pictures, too, he develops the idea of imperfect beauty; Supermodels are not stylized perfectly as usual, but z. B. without make-up, with visible blemishes and scars or in ostensibly awkward poses. In the 1990s he revolutionized the fashion scene and has worked for numerous well-known labels since then. His pictures are often strongly autobiographical, some works such as B. Märchenstüberl show how he explored his youth and his homeland.

Other celebrities Teller portrayed include supermodels Kate Moss and Linda Evangelista and musicians Courtney Love , Björk , PJ Harvey , and Patti Smith . In 2004 he directed Boris Becker and Claudia Schiffer for Strenesse . Most recently, he created a catalog for the auction house Phillips de Pury & Company , of which he is a member of the Advisory Board, for the Magnificient Jewels auction in Geneva on May 17, 2005. He photographed his clan from Bubenreuth in Central Franconia in a very strange way. Teller's books have been published by Steidl Verlag in Göttingen since the late 1990s .

Since January 2014 he has been Professor of Photography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg .

Juergen Teller works with Contemporary Fine Arts Berlin.
