The Steidl Verlag is a German publisher . The focus of the program is on international photographers as well as on fiction . The publishing house is managed by Gerhard Steidl .
history
After graduating from high school in Göttingen, Steidl worked as a printer and designer from 1967. In 1969 he founded his own publishing house. Influenced by Andy Warhol and Joseph Beuys , he began working with Klaus Staeck in 1970 , whose posters were published by Steidl. In 1972 the first book was published by Steidl-Verlag with a survey on documenta . Political non-fiction books were added from 1974, fiction in the early 1980s, and the first paperback in 1989. When Günter Grass, who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1999 , left his publishing house Luchterhand in 1993 under protest, he found a new home at Steidl Verlag. Steidl Verlag published a twelve-volume work edition for Günter Grass' 80th birthday. Gerhard Steidl said that it was very important to him to bring this out while the author was alive.
In addition to Günter Grass, Steidl publishes current literature such as Erich Loest , John McGahern , AL Kennedy , the Nobel Prize winner Halldór Laxness, and publicists such as Oskar Negt and Hans Leyendecker . From 1996 Steidl also specialized in photography . He has published the works of internationally known photographers such as Robert Frank , Joel Sternfeld , Richard Serra , Bruce Davidson , Arnold Odermatt , Edward Ruscha , Susan Meiselas , Karl Lagerfeld , Saul Leiter , Lou Reed , Martin Schoeller , Juergen Teller and many others. Advertising materials - including catalogs, flyers and invitations to haute couture shows - are produced for Chanel . The collaboration between Steidl and Lagerfeld lasted from the early 1990s until his death in 2019. In 2006, Lagerfeld said that Gerhard Steidl was the “best printer in the world”.
