Life

Schoeller is a son of the journalist and literary critic Wilfried F. Schoeller and the brother of the director Bettina Schoeller . He grew up in Frankfurt am Main . After graduating from high school, he trained as a photo designer at the Berlin Lette Association . From 1993 to 1996 he was the first assistant to the renowned American photographer Annie Leibovitz .

Schoeller has lived and worked in New York since 1993 . There he also works for The New Yorker magazine as the successor to Richard Avedon . His work also appears in publications such as National Geographic, Time, GQ, Glamor, Entertainment Weekly, Vogue and Harper's Bazaar.

An important part of his work are portraits, which he calls close-ups , spectacular close-ups of well-known personalities such as Bill Clinton , Jack Nicholson , Jon Bon Jovi or Angelina Jolie . In Germany these recordings became known through an extensive photo series in the magazine Stern (No. 27/2005). He describes his pictures as follows: “I think my pictures are not unfair. On the contrary, I think they are trying to be more honest. "

Martin Schoeller always uses the same technique for his close-ups: He measures the eye level of the person opposite and then brings the camera lens to exactly the same height. Instead of a camera flash, Schoeller uses soft neon light. About the way he works, he says, “I treat them all the same, whether they're a celebrity or a friend or a homeless person from the Lower East Side. You get the same light, the same background, the same camera, the same treatment. "
