history

Report "In the housekeeping school of the Lette Association in Berlin" 1888 in Die Gartenlaube

On February 27, 1866 , Wilhelm Adolf Lette founded the association to promote the employability of women . The association was under the protectorate of Crown Princess Victoria of Prussia , who also supported the association financially. He was a member of the Federation of German Women's Associations .

At the time the association was founded, unmarried women from the middle class had only a few opportunities to earn their living appropriately, for example as a teacher or governess . The association supported the opening of further professional fields for women. In addition, he promoted training centers and institutions as well as sales opportunities for products made by women.

In contrast to the general German women's association (ADF), which advocated similar goals, the association was initially under male management. The founding chairman, Wilhelm Adolf Lette, advocated the education of girls and women, but rejected the political emancipation of women. The employment of women should not impair their role in the family, but rather secure the life of unmarried women in a socio-economic way. In this spirit, the leading women of the association and a. Jenny Hirsch , Ulrike Henschke , Franziska Tiburtius , Katharina von Haxthausen , who emphasized the personal intellectual development in the training of young girls and women to support their natural profession as mother and housewife . Only in the first half of the 20th century did the view prevail that gainful employment can also be a job for a woman. Marie Kundt and Anna Köppen played a key role in founding and developing the first professional association for technical assistants. The work-life balance began to play a role under the leadership of Clara von Simson in the 1950s.

After Wilhelm Adolf Lette's death in 1868, his daughter Anna Schepeler-Lette took over the chairmanship of the association. Under her leadership, the association became a school authority and began teaching in 1872. Training in the areas of trade and the textile industry initially played a central role. Telegraphists, electrical assistants, trade correspondents, typesetters, bookbinders, art embroiderers, estate secretaries, dieticians, handicraft and trade teachers, fashion draftsmen and directors and others were trained.

In 1890, under the direction of Dankmar Schultz-Hencke, the Photographic Training Institute was founded. Bourgeois women, who were not yet able to access university education, were able to receive training here on a scientific basis in order to later work in research and development alongside male scientists. Numerous professions developed based on the technology of imaging processes and are still of great relevance today. These include scientific photography, X-ray photography or microphotography and were the starting point for today's metallography , medical-technical assistance and chemical-biological laboratory assistance.

In 1902 the association moved into the building erected by Alfred Messel on Viktoria-Luise-Platz in Berlin. The building, designed as a school building for a women's school, is based on the basic idea of communication and social action, but also on the principle of the women's cave. Six further courtyards are grouped in a circle around a large inner courtyard, the plan being in the form of a honeycomb. Benches in the courtyards and extended corridor corners create space and atmosphere for communication in the spirit of Socratic teaching. Administration, library and dining room were on the first floor and formed the center of the action.

In 1910 a photography class for men was set up under the direction of Carola Lohde .

In 1944 the association was converted into a foundation under public law. The schools of the Lette Association have been co-educational since 1982. From the existing training courses and in connection with the new technical developments as well as the needs of the job market, new training courses such as electrical assistant, pharmaceutical-technical assistant, media informatics | Interactive animation, nutrition and supply management.

In 1984 the building complex was expanded to include a new building that accommodated laboratories. Today the Lette-Verein is a co-educational vocational training center with the areas of nutrition and care, health, design and technology that emerged from its origins.

In 2003, the Lette-Verein took part in the self-reliant school model project run by the Berlin Senate Administration for Education, Youth and Sport. In 2006 a new school program was developed.
