Michael Otto (born February 3, 1938 in Luckenwalde ) is a German painter and graphic artist .
Life
Otto was born the son of a pastor and grew up in Erkner near Berlin , among other places . He has lived in Berlin since 1957 and studied at the Berlin University of the Arts , among other places . He is a student of the graphic artist Werner Bürger . Since 1973 he has been teaching drawing at the Lette-Verein Berlin. Since 1970 he has been depicting cityscapes in what was then West Berlin in graphics, and since 1980 increasingly in oil paintings. His focus was on overlooked aspects such as demolished houses, vacant lots, cemeteries, the Berlin Wall, city highways , S-Bahn underpasses and construction vehicles. His etchings and paintings reflected a widespread mood in West Berlin in the seventies and eighties and are in the tradition of critical realism. Michael Otto was friends with the artists Theodor Rosenhauer , Jakob Bräckle , Werner Berg and Werner Gürtner , who influenced him; Some of these encounters he also processed literarily. In 1998 he was awarded the ARAG Art Prize. Since this year he has been living as a freelance artist in the Berlin district of Friedrichshagen and partly in Romania. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, Otto has included the Berlin area in his work and accompanied the change in Berlin with ironic large-format pictures. Since 2001 Michael Otto has dealt more intensively with the landscapes of Transylvania in Romania ; Here, too, he painted overlooked landscapes such as the Copşa Mică steelworks near Hermannstadt (Sibiu).
