Jürgen Schilling

Jürgen Schilling (* 1949 in Duisburg ) is a German art historian and exhibition curator . He is the author of numerous works on contemporary art.

Live and act

Schilling studied art history, social and economic history and journalism at the universities in Göttingen, Berlin and Marburg. In 1977 it was in Marburg on the subject of action art: Identity of art and life? A documentation is being promoted.

From 1979 he was director of the Kunstverein Braunschweig . In 1985 he organized the exhibition Museum? Museum! Museum. Today's art from Hamburg's private collections . From 1993 to 2000 he worked as the successor to Elisabeth Wolken in Rome as director of the Deutsche Akademie Villa Massimo . He organized annual exhibitions under the title “Babele”, in which he juxtaposed works by the scholarship holders with works by established and young Italian artists. Instead of the previous annual exhibitions of the artists of one year, he organized solo exhibitions, which were accompanied by monographic catalogs of the individual scholarship holders. After a critical report from the Federal Audit Office , Schilling was suspended by the then Minister of State for Culture, Naumann.

Schilling held teaching positions in Braunschweig, Bremen and Vienna. He works as an exhibition curator and consultant and has published numerous publications on classical modern and contemporary art.
