In 1935, the Deutsche Auto-Rechtsschutz-AG (DARAG) was founded by the Düsseldorf entrepreneur and lawyer Heinrich Faßbender as a legal protection insurance company.

After an expansion beyond pure traffic legal protection in 1949, further lines (composite insurance ) were opened up in the insurance industry in 1962 and at the same time the international marketing of the legal protection insurance business idea began. From 1965 the ARAG Group entered the life insurance business and from 1985 into the health insurance business, for which other insurers were taken over. ARAG Krankenversicherungs-AG operates its insurance business from Munich, the second German company location of the ARAG Group. The life insurance line of business was sold to the Frankfurter-Leben Group with retroactive effect from January 1st in 2017.

Over the years, further acquisitions and the founding of international legal protection insurance companies followed. In December 2011, ARAG took the advancing internationalization into account by transforming it into a European stock corporation (SE).

In 2001, the group headquarters, the ARAG Tower in the Mörsenbroich district of Düsseldorf, was built by Lord Norman Foster and the Düsseldorf architects RKW Rhode Kellermann Wawrowsky Architektur + Städtebau.

criticism

The dealings with its own representatives as well as various insurance offers from Arag caused criticism several times, especially from the Federal Association of German Insurance Merchants .

In 2004, Arag presented its insurance agents with new contracts in which the BVK saw the risk that agents could be deprived of the “economic basis of their independent brokerage activity”. The association also criticized the allegedly necessary dealings with the representatives.

From September 2007 Arag sold its Kids & Klar child protection for four weeks through branches of the discounter Penny . The BVK complained that in this case there was no professionally competent insurance advice and that the requirements of brokerage law could hardly be met.

In March 2008, the life insurance company, together with other insurance companies as consortium leader, introduced the so-called Deutschland Rente , a unit-linked pension insurance for which customers receive a special Mastercard from the Santander Consumer Bank . Under the slogan "Shoppen für die Rente", sales made with this credit card are credited to the pension account at 0.5%. There are also credits for online purchases from certain partner companies. Such insurance was also offered in branches of Discounters Plus . The BVK said that the slogan was "thoughtless and dangerous, it suggests that you can build up an adequate pension in this way". In fact, the example calculations show only small increases in pension payments. The consumer advice center Baden-Württemberg also objected to the connection between old-age provision and discount campaigns when shopping. In the following month, the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority assessed the action critically and consulted with the group. At the same time, allegations became known that an incorrect ranking had been published in the advertisement for the offer. The company denied that it was internal documents.
