Werner Hugo Gürtner (born July 27, 1907 in Speyer ; † October 3, 1991 in Überlingen ) was a German sculptor.

The artist was born in Speyer, but came to Überlingen on Lake Constance as a child . There he completed an apprenticeship and journeyman time as a wood sculptor from 1923 to 1928 . From 1928 to 1932 he studied in Munich at the Academy of Applied Arts and in 1934 settled in Überlingen as a sculptor. His works, mostly made of bronze and often horse motifs, can be found mainly in the Lake Constance area. The sculptures that Werner Gürtner created in his workshop on Spetzgarter Weg in Aufkirch come across almost at every step in the city and region. Werner Gürtner's works characterize numerous fountains and central squares. The jackdaw fountain at Pflummerplatz, the “Fischerbüble” fountain at the monastery pharmacy, the herons in front of the Kursaal, “father and son”, now at the thermal baths. The memorials at the Goldbacher tunnel, in the cemetery and in Härlen are also part of it.

Gürtner portrayed numerous well-known personalities such as the writer Bruno Goetz , the Zeppelin boss Hugo Eckener , Friedrich Georg Jünger and Richard Wagner's descendants such as Verena, Winifred , Wolfgang and Wieland Wagner .

He was the creator of the so-called Holbein horse , a 1936 created horse sculpture made of cast concrete , which was originally sold to a private individual. Due to a lack of space, the sculpture was donated to the city of Freiburg. Since around 1937 it has therefore graced the intersection of Holbein-Strasse / Hans-Thoma-Strasse (hence the name) in a green area in Freiburg in the Wiehre district . This naturalistic sculpture has been the subject of constant change by the population since the early 1980s and is very popular because it can be easily adapted to current day-to-day events. His Hans Kuony fountain is one of Stockach's landmarks .

In addition to his artistic work, Gürtner was politically active in the German Peace Union , for which he ran unsuccessfully on the state list of Baden-Württemberg in the 1965 federal election.
