A total of 518 seats

The 1965 federal election took place on September 19, 1965 - with the exception of constituency 135 Obertaunuskreis , which was not elected until October 3, 1965 because of the death of a constituency applicant. In the election for the 5th German Bundestag , Ludwig Erhard stood for the first time as the top candidate of the Union parties .

Erhard was elected Chancellor in 1963 during the current legislative period as the successor to Konrad Adenauer . For the SPD met again the SPD chairman , the Governing Mayor of Berlin , Willy Brandt , at. The CDU and CSU received an unchanged 251 Bundestag seats, the SPD received seven more seats than before and the FDP lost 17 of its 67 seats.

    The coalition of the CDU / CSU and FDP was continued, but broke up in autumn of next year and was replaced by the first grand coalition of the Federal Republic. Ludwig Erhard remained Federal Chancellor until his resignation on November 30, 1966, Willy Brandt remained Governing Mayor of Berlin and declared that he was not going to run for Chancellor in the 1969 Bundestag election - a declaration that became obsolete in 1966 when the Grand Coalition was formed.
