Gabriele and Helmut Nothhelfer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gabriele Nothhelfer (born Zimmermann * March 5, 1945 in Berlin ) and Helmut Nothhelfer (* June 3, 1945 in Bonn ) are photographers and an artist couple .

Biographies

Gabriele and Helmut Nothhelfer were trained together at the Berlin Lette School (Department of Photography) from 1967 to 1969. They then studied at the Folkwang School of Design in Essen from 1969 to 1970.

Gabriele and Helmut Nothhelfer take photos of people in public. Occasions are usually festivals and other public events. Due to their continuous photographic practice, they have become important documentarists in German everyday history (readable from the time-bound plurality of clothing and the way in which the depicted persons portray themselves / themselves). They photograph individuals and groups in daylight in the surroundings found by the photographers, inconspicuously staged, yet with a clearly individual signature. In this respect, they work in a minimalist way and according to the row principle. Their tools are 35mm cameras .

reception

Michael Zimmermann writes in a volume edited by the gallery owners Ann and Jürgen Wilde about the photographer couple in 1983: “Every single picture comes from both emergency helpers. They learned the photographic gaze (which knows how to differentiate between the visible and the invisible) together, in years of discussion and controlled through practice with the camera. "

Works by the photographer couple are represented in many domestic and foreign collections.
