Michael Michalsky (born February 23, 1967 in Göttingen ) is a German fashion designer and designer .

Life

Michalsky was born in Göttingen in 1967, grew up in Rümpel in Schleswig-Holstein and graduated from high school in 1987 at the Theodor Mommsen School in nearby Bad Oldesloe . He then studied at the London College of Fashion until 1992 , where he also worked in the London Lighthouse Hospice for AIDS sufferers. He began his professional career as a design manager at Levi Strauss & Co. in Germany.

In 1995 he started to work as head designer at Adidas and from 2000 onwards he was responsible for the design of all Adidas products as global creative director . For the sporting goods manufacturer he developed collaborations and product lines with the fashion designers Yohji Yamamoto and Stella McCartney and the rap musician Missy Elliott . In addition, he brought out older Adidas products with a " retro look". In May 2005, the Korean luxury goods company Sungjoo Group commissioned him to refresh the ailing fashion brand MCM and hired him as the new creative director. In June 2006 he left Adidas and founded his own fashion and lifestyle company in Berlin .

In January 2007 he presented his first fashion show in the Rotes Rathaus . In 2007, together with Eva Padberg , he supported the Rettet Darfur initiative by Fairplanet and the Society for Threatened Peoples and became the project's official ambassador.

From 2007 to 2009 he designed design collections for Tchibo under the Mitch & Co. brand . In October 2009 and September 2010, together with the US consumer goods company Procter & Gamble, he designed a time-limited design for the packaging of its Ariel detergent . In 2009 he designed a summer collection for Sony with devices and accessories from the electronics manufacturer's range. In the summer of 2009 he founded the subsidiary Michalsky designLab , which exclusively takes care of design work that is not in the fashion sector.

As part of the Berlin Fashion Week 2008 he presented creations for the spring and summer season 2009 under his premium label “Michalsky”, which he promoted with political statements such as “Atomkraft? No thanks! ”Or“ No Blood for Oil ”. In cooperation with the WWF he brought out the T-shirt collection “Protect!” Under the label “Michalsky for WWF”, which shows animal illustrations of endangered species on the camisoles made of organic cotton. For every T-shirt sold, five euros went to the WWF.

In 2009, Vogue named Michalsky the "new German fashion pope". Under the title StyleNite , he has been organizing an event in Berlin since 2010 that arose from the Michalsky fashion shows and takes place twice a year during Berlin Fashion Week. In March 2012, Michalsky joined as a judge in the final show of the VOX telecast The perfect model on. In October 2012 he presented a sofa collection in collaboration with the furniture manufacturer Polipol . In 2016, he replaced Wolfgang Joop as a juror in the 11th season of Germany's Next Top Model . Since 2016 he has been a fashion expert alongside Annemarie Carpendale and Steven Gätjen through the Oscar broadcast of Pro7 .

Awards

  • In 2003 Michalsky was named "National Designer of the Year" with the GQ Award Germany and
  • 2004 ISPO VISION named “Sportstyle Designer of the Year”.
  • In July 2005, he and his Adidas design team were elected Designer Team of the Year at the “ red dot design awards ”.
  • Michalsky was included in the exhibition “ 100 Heads of Tomorrow ”, which was selected in 2006 by a prominent jury on behalf of the “ Land of Ideas ” initiative under the patronage of Federal President Horst Köhler .
