Kostas Murkudis (Κώστας Μουρκούδης; * 1959 in Dresden ) is a German fashion designer of Greek origin. From 1986 to 1993 he worked as an assistant to Helmut Lang and founded his own company in 1994.

Life

The son of Greek parents grew up in Dresden and initially studied chemistry before turning to fashion design at the Lette Association's design school in Berlin . In 1986, after a season with Wolfgang Joop , he began an intensive seven-year collaboration with Helmut Lang. During this time he became the Viennese designer's “right hand”. Afterwards Murkudis began in Munich - after becoming a recipient of the Philipp-Morris Design Awards - to develop his own collection under the name "Kostas Murkudis". A fashion show in Paris followed - the premiere of the women's collection on this first parade in front of a top-class audience was a great success. A men's collection was added.

Murkudis loves visiting galleries and museums and compares his work to that of a restorer.

On behalf of Renzo Rosso (Diesel), Kostas Murkudis was also responsible as chief designer for the Italian brand "New York Industries" from 2000 to 2003. From 2003 Kostas Murkudis made a name for himself in a wide variety of collaborations, including a. with Johnstons Cashmere, Schiesser, Mykita, Pringle of Scotland , Ludwig Reiter Schuhmanufaktur etc., as a versatile designer.

In 2010 Murkudis showed in the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt am Main as part of an event for the exhibition Not in Fashion. Fashion and photography of the 90s his fashion in interaction with light and sound effects by Carsten Nicolai alias Alva Noto . Numerous collaborations with the artist followed, including a. another show as part of the Berlin Fashion Week 2011.

In 2011/2012 Kostas Murkudis worked at Balenciaga and Pringle of Scotland as a womenswear freelance designer and consultant. From 2012 to the end of 2013 Kostas Murkudis is the creative director of the Closed label .

From July 2015 to February 2016, the Frankfurt Museum of Modern Art will be showing the exhibition in contact with MMK 2 . Kostas Murkudis and the MMK collection .

Kostas Murkudis works on his own label and also participates in selected projects as a designer. He lives and works in Berlin.
