Carsten Nicolai (born September 18, 1965 in Karl-Marx-Stadt ) is a German artist, musician and label owner. As a musician he is known by the pseudonyms noto and alva noto .

Life

Nicolai grew up in Karl-Marx-Stadt. His brother is the artist Olaf Nicolai .

From 1985 to 1990 Nicolai studied landscape architecture at the Technical University of Dresden . He had his first exhibitions as a visual artist at the EIGEN + ART gallery in Berlin / Leipzig. In 1997 he took part in the documenta X in Kassel, in 2001 in the Venice Biennale , whereupon he had solo exhibitions in the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt in 2005, in the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin in 2005, in Haus Konstruktiv in Zurich in 2007 and at PaceWildenstein (since 2010 Wildenstein & Company ) in New York in 2007.

In 1994/1995 Nicolai founded the label noton.archiv for ton und nichtton , which merged with the Chemnitz label raster music as raster-noton due to very similar content orientations . Today Nicolai lives in Berlin and Chemnitz.

As a musician, Nicolai is one of the best known representatives of contemporary electronic music . He has often worked in collaborations such. B. worked with Scanner , Thomas Knak , Mika Vainio , Michael Nyman , Ryoji Ikeda or Ryuichi Sakamoto and is part of the signal project (with Olaf Bender and Frank Bretschneider ). As the formation Diamond Version , Nicolai and Olaf Bender played the opening act for Depeche Mode's Eastern European tour in 2013.

Currently (2010) he is working under his pseudonym Alva Noto with Blixa Bargeld ( Einstürzende Neubauten ) on the ANBB project . So far an EP called Ret Marut Handshake and the album Mimikry have been released .

In October 2010 Nicolai presented at an event on the occasion of the exhibition Not in Fashion. Fashion and photography of the 90s in the Museum of Modern Art (MMK) in Frankfurt am Main his light and sound art together with fashion creations by the Dresden artist Kostas Murkudis . At the Ruhrtriennale 2012 he worked with Ryūichi Sakamoto and the Ensemble Modern .

In 2015, Carsten Nicolai as Alva Noto and Ryūichi Sakamoto were responsible for the film music for The Revenant . The soundtrack was nominated for Best Score at the 2016 Golden Globe Awards .

Carsten Nicolai is a member of the German Association of Artists . In 2007 he was awarded a scholarship to the Villa Massimo in Rome.

Since 2015 he has held a professorship for art with a focus on digital and time-based media at the Dresden University of Fine Arts .
