Robin Rimbaud

Robin Rimbaud (* 1964 in Southfields, London ) is a British musician, multimedia artist and sound designer who mostly works under the pseudonym Scanner . He runs his own label Bette and is also a member of the band Githead - together with Colin Newman from Wire and Malka Spigel and Max Franken from Minimal Compact .

Live and act

Rimbaud took an early interest in avant-garde literature, cinema and music. He studied modern art at Kingston University in Surrey , where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts . At this time he founded the band The Rimbaud Brothers together with his fellow student Tony Rimbaud , which distributed their pieces on cassette in the early 1980s. The band later renamed themselves Dau Al Set , with Chris Staley added. In 1986 Rimbaud released a cassette compilation with Peyrere on which Current 93 , Coil , Derek Jarman , Nurse with Wound and Test Dept. participated. In the same year he released a soundtrack for the short film A Horse with No Name by Phil Viner , which was shown at the London Film Festival . In 1989 he contributed to James Park's book Cultural Icons on contemporary art, literature, music and dance .

In 1992 he made his debut under the name "Scanner" with a CD of the same name, which was released by Ash International . His stage name Scanner refers to the radio scanners that Rimbaud often used as musical instruments. The debut was followed by twelve other releases, all of which appeared on Touch.

In 1994 Rimbaud, in collaboration with Matthew Fuller and Graham Harwood, installed an early webzine called I / O / D that is still online.

Rimbaud has been a commentator on BBC Radio 4 on cultural issues since 2000 . From 2002 he started working more closely with choreographers, so in 2002 he wrote the piece Nemesis in collaboration with Wayne McGregor and the Random Dance Company . In 2003 Detritus followed for the Rambert Dance Company and in 2004 Qualia for the Royal Ballet . In 2006 he designed the sound for Merce Cunningham's E: vent at London's Barbican Theater . Works for the Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company and the Siobhan Davies Dance Company followed in 2007 .

In 2006, together with the author Sukhdev Sandhu and the designer group Mind Unit, he developed the sound design for the online journal Night Haunts , which focuses on London's nightlife. In 2007 he created the sound for the film Gravesend by British artist Steve McQueen , which was shown at the 52nd Venice Biennale .

In 2008 Rimbaud was Honorary President of the Qwartz Electronic Music Awards in Paris .

In 2009 he and the video artist Olga Mink showed the HD video installation Atlantida at the 2nd Canary Islands Biennale; In the summer of that year he released the soundtrack for the opening ceremony of the 13th World Swimming Championships in Rome , as well as the soundtrack for the Italian Samsung Corby advertising campaign.

Rimbaud has been visiting professor at the University College in Falmouth and at the Le Fresnoy-Studio national des arts contemporains in Tourcoing, France, since 2009 .

In October 2010, Scanner and The Post Modern Jazz Quartet ( Michael Bisio , Khan Jamal , Matthew Shipp and Michael Thompson) released the album Blink of an Eye, a synthesis of post-modern (electronic) elements and “pure acoustic” jazz .

Awards

Rimbaud's radio adaptation of Jean Cocteau's The Beloved Voice (La Voix humaine) for the BBC was awarded the Prix ​​Marulić in 2000. His installation Wishing Well (together with the Austrian artist Katarina Matiasek) won the 2001 Neptun Water Prize .
