Falmouth ( Cornish Aberfal ) is a port city on the south coast of the county of Cornwall in England . The city has 20,775 inhabitants (as of 2001). Falmouth was originally called Peny-cwm-cuic , which was corrupted in English to “Pennycomequick”.

history

Sir John Killigrew founded the city of Falmouth in 1613. As early as 1540, Henry VIII had the coastal fortress Pendennis Castle built here to defend the Carrick Roads . During the English Civil War , Pendennis Castle was the penultimate fortress to surrender to the supporters of Parliament. Faced with the threat from the Spanish Armada , the fortifications were reinforced by steep ramparts in the late 16th century.

The schooner Pickle carried news of the English victory and Admiral Nelson's death in the Battle of Trafalgar at Falmouth .

During World War II , Falmouth was the starting point for a commando that attacked and destroyed the German submarine base at Saint-Nazaire in 1942 under the code name Operation Chariot .

In memory of this there is a small memorial stone at the "Fish Strand Quay". The inscription with the heading "OPERATION CHARIOT" reads:

However, the main source of income for the city today is tourism . With its pretty Georgian-style houses housing guest houses and hotels, and five beaches, Falmouth has become a popular resort.

Falmouth was connected to the British railway network in 1863. Today, the First Group- owned Maritime Line connects Falmouth as a regular branch line with the main line running through Truro from London via Plymouth to Penzance .

The city can be reached by car from Truro on the A39 road .

There is a year-round ferry service between Falmouth and St Mawes on the opposite side of Carrick Roads. During the tourist season there are also regular other boat connections, especially via the Carrick Roads and the Fal upriver towards Truro.

Attractions

In 2003 the National Maritime Museum opened its doors. The fortress Pendennis Castle is a museum owned by English Heritage .

Cornwall is known for its mild, maritime climate, shaped by the Gulf Stream , and therefore an almost Mediterranean flora . There are a number of well-known parks around Falmouth that can be visited, such as B. Trebah , Glendurgan and Trelissick . A visit is particularly worthwhile when the rhododendrons are in bloom in May and June. In Glendurgan there is a small, from laurel hedges existing maze of 1833 having an irregular road network.
