St Mawes Castle

Main article: St Mawes Castle

It is a well-preserved fortress from the time of Henry VIII . The facility was built between 1539 and 1545. Together with Pendennis Castle, it served to protect Carrick Roads, the third largest natural harbor in the world. The castle was purely an artillery position , the aim was to bring as much firepower into it as possible. It is still considered one of the most decorated castles under Henry VIII. You can find very finely detailed gargoyles , cannon openings and hand carvings in the rooms of the castle captain. Originally the castle had a chain-operated drawbridge. The castle was expanded with another artillery ring in the 17th century. A battery of 24 pound cannons was placed in the ring in the 19th century, and two 64 pound cannons were added later. Together with Pendennis Castle , a minefield was controlled from here during World War II .

Harbor and bay

The Hotel The Ship and Castle is located at the harbor (at the intersection of The Quay / Grove Hill ). This hotel was one of the filming locations for the movie Killer Ahoy! which was created here in 1964. The balcony of the room from which Mr. Stringer kept contact with Miss Marple is still unchanged today, as are the side streets. St. Mawes Bay served as the backdrop for the fictional ship HMS Battledore from this film.
