Matthew Shipp (born December 7, 1960 in Wilmington , Delaware ) is an American pianist of creative jazz .

Live and act

Shipp took piano lessons from the age of five and became interested in jazz from the age of twelve. He first studied at the University of Delaware , then moved to the New England Conservatory of Music , where he was a student of Ran Blake . Shipp was a member of the David S. Ware Quartet. He formed his own quartet with saxophonist Rob Brown , bassist William Parker , with whom he also performed in a duo, and drummer Whit Dickey . His numerous publications appeared on various labels, the first own records Shipps were moved to Henry Rollins ' 2.13.61 label. He has served as curator and director at times for Thirsty Ear .

Shipp has made a name for himself in the New York hip-hop scene by consistently adhering to the achievements of free jazz . In 2003 he recorded the LP Antipop vs Matthew Shipp together with the Anti-Pop Consortium . Together with the New York producer El-P , Thirsty Ear created the LP High Water in 2004 as part of the Blue Series curated by Shipp since 2001 ; he continued to record with musicians like Cecil Taylor , Ivo Perelman , Susie Ibarra , Hamid Drake , Daniel Carter , DJ Spooky , Roy Campbell , Mat Walerian , Whit Dickey ( Morph , 2020) and Roscoe Mitchell .
