Mat Walerian

Mateusz “Mat” Walerian (* 1984) is a Polish jazz and improvisation musician ( alto saxophone , bass clarinet , soprano clarinet , flute , composition).

Live and act

Walerian grew up in Thorn and began playing the piano at the age of six; Music by John Coltrane brought him to jazz. During school he started playing the saxophone and was a member of the school orchestra. Walerian studied Eastern philosophy and Japanese culture in his student years ; as a musician he is largely self-taught . During this time he also learned the soprano clarinet, flute and bass clarinet. In his musical projects he moves between chamber music , jazz classics and Asian influences.

Walerian founded his own trio and has performed with Sainthunter, White Lotus, Blackadmin and Demiurge Droppin 'Acid since 2008 . In the Zen Trio he played with the string Mieczysław Litwiński and the harpist Zofia Dowgiałło. He also performed with Marcin and Bartłomiej Oleś . He directs the Okuden Music concert series and works in a duo with his mentor, the pianist Matthew Shipp , with whom he recorded the album The Uppercut: Live at Okuden in May 2012 , which was released on ESP disc in 2015 . In October 2012, the trio album Jungle Live at Okuden (ESP-Disk, 2016), with Matthew Shipp and Hamid Drake , was created - also as part of the Okuden Music Concert Series .
