Hamid Drake


Hamid Drake (born August 3, 1955 in Monroe , Louisiana ) is an American jazz musician (drums, percussion).
Live and act
Drake grew up in Chicago, where he learned the drums from Fred Anderson's son before taking his place in the Andersons band. Soon afterwards he also worked with George Lewis and other musicians from the AACM circle. Since 1978 he belonged like Adam Rudolph to Foday Musa Suso's Mandingo Griot Society and then played with Don Cherry and Jim Pepper , but also z. B. in the reggae scene in Chicago. He also played with the soul singer Melba Moore and in the rock band Animal Farm . He often works with William Parker , David Murray , Nicole Mitchell , Peter Brötzmann , Scott Fields , Georg Graew , Irène Schweizer and Ken Vandermark , but also with Bill Laswell , with Wadada Leo Smith , Viktor Tóth or with Michael Zerang . With Ab Baars , Luc Ex and Ingrid Laubrock he forms Luc Ex 'Assemblée .
Drake was one of the first American drummers to seriously study the percussion music traditions of other musical cultures and was considered one of the most outstanding percussionists in the late 1990s.
