Ingrid Laubrock (born September 24, 1970 in Stadtlohn ) is a German jazz musician (soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophone ). Especially on the tenor and soprano saxophone , she has "developed a very independent and unmistakable voice that is able to adapt flexibly to a wide variety of contexts."

Live and act

Laubrock received piano lessons from the age of four and sang in choirs from the age of eleven. After graduating from high school in 1989, she moved to Great Britain, where she lived until 2008. In London she received saxophone lessons from Jean Toussaint and soon worked in the musician collective F-IRE . In 1998 she founded "Nois4" with the Brazilian singer Mônica Vasconcelos ; After studying with Myra Melford , in 2006 the nonet “No” was founded. In the same year she documented her duo with pianist Liam Noble on CD , which was later expanded with drummer Tom Rainey to form the trio “Sleepthief” (CD of the same name on “Intakt” 2008). She is a sought-after guest soloist and has worked with Kenny Wheeler , Evan Parker , David Liebman , Billy Cobham , Jean Toussaint, Norma Winstone , Stan Sulzmann , Lol Coxhill , David Axelrod , Veryan Weston , Siouxsie and the Banshees , Taylor Ho Bynum ( Enter the Plustet , 2016) and Django Bates (in "Human Chain") worked together. She also interprets contemporary classical music in the Continuum Ensemble . She forms Luc Ex 'Assemblée with Luc Ex , Ab Baars and Hamid Drake .

In 2008 she moved to Brooklyn , where she quickly gained a foothold and enriched the New York scene with her bands Anti-House , Paradoxical Frog and Sleepthief .

Prizes and awards

In 1999 she was nominated for the BT Jazz Awards . For her work at F-IRE , Laubrock received the "BBC Jazz Award for Innovation" in 2004. Her compositional work was honored with a Fellowship for Jazz Composition from the Arts Foundation in 2006. In 2009 she was awarded the SWR Jazz Prize; According to the jury's statement, German jazz finds her “one of its most creative and idiosyncratic artists.” In 2012, she received the improviser in residence grant from the city of Moers and lived and worked in the city on the Lower Rhine for a year. In 2015 she won the Down Beat Critic Polls in the Rising Star category. "Vogelfrei" from the album Contemporary Chaos Practices was voted one of the 25 Best Classical Music Tracks of 2018 by The New York Times .
