Gert van der Schuren (also Gert van der Schüren ; * allegedly 1411 in Xanten ; † 1496 ) worked as a secretary at the court of the Duke of Kleve and was the author of a Klevian chronicle.

Life

Gert van der Schuren came from Xanten and was a son of Johan van der Schuren († 1439), who had held the office of Cologne bailiff under Archbishop Friedrich von Saar Werden, and Drude van Bemel († 1449 ), who came from an important family of lay judges / 50). Gert had several siblings: Johan, Rutger, who became canon at Xanten's Viktorstift , Wilhem, Bela and Mechtelt. Gert was married to a Lysbeth van Eger († 1455/57) in his first marriage and to a Getrudis in his second marriage. The first marriage had at least three sons, Stephan, Lambert and Johann, who all embarked on a spiritual career. He lived with Lysbeth (Elisabeth) in Wesel for at least two years , where two of their sons were born. He lived with Getrudis on the Dornick house near Büderich, which was later destroyed by the Rhine .

In 1440 Gert van der Schuren acted as a notary. However, his enrollment at Cologne University is only documented for 1441. Probably in 1450 he took up his duties as secretary in the firm Cleves under Duke John I of. Gert seems to have been held in high esteem by the Duke of Kleve, because he was called in early on for special missions and often accompanied him on trips. In 1471, on behalf of his employer, Gert van der Schuren began to write a Klevian chronicle in the Lower Franconian language, for which he extensively evaluated the administrative records of the Klever chancellery available to him. His presentation breaks off suddenly with the reports on the year 1450. Gert died in 1496.
