Sam Pluta

Samuel Francis "Sam" Pluta (* 1979 ) is an American musician ( live electronics , composition ) and university professor who works in the field of improvisation music and contemporary music .

Pluta studied computer science at Santa Clara University ; After completing his bachelor's degree in 2001, he continued his studies at the University of Birmingham and University of Texas at Austin , where he earned master's degrees in composition. In 2012 he received his doctorate from Columbia University on the subject of "Laptop improvisation in a multidimensional space". His teachers included George Lewis , Brad Garton, Tristan Murail , Fabien Lévy , Scott Wilson, Jonty Harrison, Russell Pinkston, Lynn Shurtleff, and Bruce Pennycook. He has been working in the field of improvised and electroacoustic music with Evan Parker , Ikue Mori , Peter Evans , Craig Taborn , Chris Pitsiokos , Jim Altieri , Rodrigo Constanzo and others since the 2000s . a. in projects such as the ElectroAcoustic Septet , the Peter Evans Quintet and Rocket Science , as well as with Jeff Snyder ( ExcvlusiveOr , 2008) and Ingrid Laubrock 2011, he presented his debut album Machine Language (Carrier). a. Alex Mincek , Matthew Gold , Russell Greenberg and Matt Ward contributed.

Pluta has composed for the Wet Ink Ensemble (of which he is the technical director), the New York Philharmonic and other contemporary music ensembles. 2011–15 he directed the Electronic Music Studio at the Manhattan School of Music ; He has also taught at Columbia University and Bennington University and specialty courses at the Walden School. Pluta has been teaching as Assistant Professor of Music at the College of the University of Chicago since 2016 , where he also directs the CHIME Studio and works with the Ensemble Contempo for New Music at the Chicago Center for Contemporary Composition .
