Okkyung Lee (* 1975 in Daejeon / South Korea ) is a South Korean cellist (interpreter, improviser) and composer .

Life and effect

Lee, who grew up in Daejeon, Korea, moved to Boston in 1993, where she studied and earned degrees in both composition and film music ( Berklee College of Music ) and improvisation ( New England Conservatory ). Since moving to New York City in 2000, she has played and recorded with a wide variety of artists. These include Derek Bailey , Carla Bozulich, Nels Cline , Anthony Coleman , Chris Corsano , Sylvie Courvoisier , Mark Dresser , Fred Frith , Carolos Giffoni, Shelley Hirsch , Lindha Kallerdahl, Andrew Lampert, Paul Lytton , Miya Masaoka, Raz Mesinai, Min Xiao- fen, Thurston Moore , Butch Morris , Larry Ochs , Jim O'Rourke , Beth Orton, Evan Parker , Zeena Parkins , Marina Rosenfeld, Wadada Leo Smith , C. Spencer Yeh and John Zorn .

Lee developed her own musical language, building on contemporary cell techniques and profound experience in improvisation and composition. Using her solid classical training as a springboard, she merges jazz, sounds, traditional Korean music and noises and creates a unique musical synthesis.

Lee often appears as a solo performer and with her own ensembles. She also works frequently with the groups of pianist / composer Vijay Iyer and poet and hip-hopper Mike Ladd as well as in a duo with turntable / video artist Christian Marclay .

She is at important festivals both in North America (Victoriaville, Portland, San Francisco, Whitney Biennial 2006 “Day for Night” in New York) and in Europe ( mœrs festival , Taktlos Festival Zurich / Basel, Venice Biennale , Kontracom Festival in Salzburg) occurred.
